It appears the committee doesn’t want to diminish a conference championship

If LSU wins out and the committee puts Tennessee and Georgia in the playoffs, the optics would be terrible. Two conference teams in and the conference champion left out after defeating the number 1 team in the championship game. I could definitely see Georgia getting in, but 2 SEC teams in following a victory over the consensus number 1 team in the championship game.

If LSU beats UGA, then they are in.

The committee didn't seem to care when the left out 10-2 Big Ten champion Penn St in favor of 11-1 Ohio St...who Penn St beat in the regular season.
Why? They would have just as many losses as Tennessee. Plus a significantly worse strength of schedule. Now, I'm sure the logical argument would be Georgia beat Tennessee. But wouldn't that same logic apply in favor of Tennessee over LSU?

Beat Georgia convincingly, and Tennessee and LSU go. Beat Georgia in a close one and Georgia and LSU go. Lose to georgia and the Vols and Bulldogs go.
All of this depends on some other mayhem. It's possible that TCU and USC go undefeated the rest of the way. If so, maybe only one SEC team goes. Unlikely, though.

No way in the world do they keep the sec champion out if LSU wins.

But LSU has the SEC championship which is a data point to the committee.
Basically the committee would be choosing the head to head over the conference championship.

Conference championship win means way more than a regular season win

If a conference title eludes a team - no entrance to the CFP...simply my take

Read the CFP Selection Protocol: CFP
So the question is, can a 2 loss team be considered equivalent to a group of one loss teams to the extent that the tiebreakers (championships, head to head, strength of schedule) need to be applied?
That said, the most important element that almost guarantees the selection of a Brian Kelly team is this:
quote:
For purposes of any four-team playoff, the process will inevitably need to select the four best teams from among several with legitimate claims to participate.
quote:
Establish a committee that will be instructed to place an emphasis on winning conference championships, strength of schedule and head-to-head competition when comparing teams with similar records and pedigree (treat final determination like a tie-breaker; apply specific guidelines).
quote:
When circumstances at the margins indicate that teams are comparable, then the following criteria must be considered:
Championships won
Strength of schedule
Head-to-head competition (if it occurred)
Comparative outcomes of common opponents (without incenting margin of victory)

Committee has consistently favored Conference Champions.

If LSU wins out, they’re in. The committee won’t have two non-champions from the same conference, let alone the same division of the conference.

If LSU beat Georgia and was left out, you would absolutely start seeing teams like Alabama and Georgia purposely losing one game to a quality opponent by a small margin just to NOT have to play in the conference championship game.
That or they would just “opt out” of the conference championship game if they were an undefeated top 4 team and honestly I wouldn’t blame them. A conference championship means nothing compared to a national championship

It will depend on how the committee feels about it. I’m sure there are some on there that feel both ways. It’s all about which side can be more persuasive.

I was overlooking the fact that both are from the same division.
