Lots of young people snapping.
Wonder who could have predicted this?

maybe, maybe not. There are plenty of people who hide their mental health struggles from their friends and family. His father was able to tell something wasn't right with his son last time he saw him, but that doesn't mean he's gonna know exactly what's going on, especially for a college kid who doesn't see his parents every day anymore.

When your kids are grown you don't know what they're really getting into. They might not communicate regularly or see each other very often. You hope and pray for the best, but people get caught up in the crazy quickly if they hang around it.

How did he get into UVA?

He applied and got accepted. Why is this such a mystery to you?

Why was he still in U VA if he was off the team for a couple of years?
So, if he leaves the team he can't remain as a student?

He likely wouldn't have a history of mental health issues if schizophrenia. Onset of symptoms do not generally occur until a person is in their twenties.

Someone in this thread said he went to one of the worst high schools in America. My high school was a top 50 high school nationally and was also in VA and only a small portion of applicants got in.

You don’t think there are smart kids that test well at shitty high schools?
There are certainly dumb kids at good high schools.
There might be more smart kids at good high schools and more dumb kids at shitty schools, but the (apparent) line of thought that going to a bad school means he shouldn’t have been able to get into UVA is.. odd.

He's a minority student who was a national merit scholar. To be a national merit scholar, he would have needed to test well on the PSAT. If he tested well on the PSAT, odds are he did well on the SAT/ACT and probably made good grades too. He also very well have been given an extra boost as a preferred walk-on to gain admittance (that happens plenty). Regardless, just because he went to a bad high school doesn't mean those bad high schools never send kids to good schools, especially in-state state universities. Yes, UVA is difficult to get into, but that doesn't mean they have no students from inner-city schools.
I'm sorry, it's just really odd that you are having trouble wrapping your head around how a walk-on football player was still a student if he quit the team. He was never on scholarship. He applied and was admitted to the school as a student. You don't get kicked out of school, even as a scholarship athlete, if you quit playing sports. If he was making grades and had a plan in place to take care of tuition, there's no reason him playing football would have interfered with his ability to remain a student. The school isn't gonna say, "well, you aren't on academic probation, but you quit football and went to a bad high school, so you can't go to school here anymore."
Do you realize how many scholarship athletes who are "processed" still stay in school and just don't play sport for the school anymore? And it happens even more with walk-on players like this guy. Hell, I'll even go the extreme route with Tyrann Mathieu. When he was first kicked off the football team before the 2012 season, he was still a student at LSU. It wasn't until his subsequent arrest that he was dismissed from the school too. The school has no basis to dismiss students in good academic standing because they lose a scholarship or quit playing a sport. That wouldn't even be legal.

Honestly, in this day and age where it seems everyone hates everybody... how can you tell if someone is "flying under the radar" or if they are merely just another a-hole?

Jones Sr., however, did say he noticed his son "was really paranoid" when they last spoke.
And versus saying let's get you some help he's like "aight I'll talk to you later."
edit: and I'm picking on him but a ton of people have no balls to say what needs to be said when someone is being or leading to destructive behavior

Sounds like it could have been a schizophrenic episode. It’s not uncommon for someone his age to have their first psychotic episode and it can be very severe.
And schizophrenia usually manifests in your early 20's.

This was quite the tirade because I was curious how a student who ended up murdering 3 people got into an elite college. And then stayed there after legal violations as well as breaking school bylaws that required internal intervention. Yes sorry that perplexed me.

Your whole post is pretty spot on.
This part made me laugh though. We are on tigerdroppings, baw.

Could be the attorney told his father to start laying groundwork to save the son's life? He'll get the needle in Virginia unless some sort of diminished capacity is introduced at trial. If there are no texts, all we have is the fathers interpretation of an oral conversation.
