The Sandwich Scandal at the Heart of the World’s Greatest Golfing Event

The Masters has it all—except its missing original pimento cheese recipe.

The greatest event in sports history is missing a vital recipe: that of its original pimento cheese sandwich. To be clear, it’s little more than peppered cheese on white bread, yet for its simplicity, it’s somehow an indelible figure in the Masters’ concession scene. “Pimento cheese has latched on in people’s memories,” says Michaux, “even though—I would swear to you—every other sandwich they have out there is better.”

I’ll never make it there but I’ve drooled since the late sixties hearing the oohs and ahhs about the cheapest and best go to for an event.
Wish I could get the original recipe.

I got to go to the first round of The Masters the first year Tiger won. I was 13 at the time and had no idea what I was experiencing. We got the pimento cheese sandwiches and I have no memory of what I thought of them. We followed Tiger around not to watch him play golf but to watch Fluff, his caddie.

I’ve been to The Masters three times, the first being 1996 when Greg Norman had an epic choke job. That sandwich is easily one of the worst items on the menu.

I went 3 times from 2008 to 2014. I thought pimento cheese was great but preferred the egg salad. I'm not sure if I had the old or new recipe back then but it was good.

I went this past spring and the pimento cheese sandwich was very different than any other I've ever had. I don't want to say I didn't enjoy it, because I like it better than the egg salad sandwich, but it certainly wasn't my favorite thing on the menu.
I'll try it again next spring.

The sandwich is good, but I stand by that pimento cheese does not make an entire sandwich. It is a topping or dip and is far superior in that capacity.
They have some pimento cheese deviled eggs out there that are dynamite.

I'm actually with you here. I love pimento cheese, but with crackers or Fritos Scoops.

Pretty easy to get into the practice rounds. I’ve been several times.

I've been to the Masters 20 times and have not had my 1st Pimento cheese sandwich...my wife likes them... I enjoy the pulled pork and chicken sandwiches just fine with the $4 beers its best $7 meal out there.

The pulled pork was once really, really bad. It's gotten much better.

I couldn't imagine being like this. I tried every sandwich they had the first day I was there..

I always make it a point to go to Wifesaver when in the Augusta area, the pimento cheese there is outstanding, though I'll agree with those who contend its better as a dip or on a cracker. I have my pimento cheese recipe pretty close to Wifesaver's which apparently pretty close to the original.

I went to the Saturday round in 2003. I’ve never been a fan of egg salad but I tried one and loved it. I found this recipe a few years ago but I’ve never made it.
