I know there is a monster thread here, but just inquiring in general if it is worth a watch for someone like me who loved the Lord of the Rings, but doesn't know a lot about the back story leading up to this series.

If you are talking about Jackson's version of Tolkien's world in regards to the movies he made you probably will but if talking about the books I would probably avoid it.

You will enjoy it more if you don't care about it staying faithful to the source. Which if you don't know the history, like the majority of people, you'll probably enjoy it.
It has top tier TV production and cinematography. The story is lacking though. I had a hard time with it/didn't care for it because of all the inaccuracies but someone like my brother, who just likes Lord of the Rings and has never read the books, loved it.
It wont hurt anything to give it a try.

You're speaking specifically of The Hobbit?
That's not what the Amazon series is about.
And to answer your question if it's

worth a watch
Unequivocally No.

I enjoyed it
It wasn’t a grand slam, but it also wasn’t a strikeout

I'm a big Tolkien fan. I feel obligated to watch, but I'm struggling with it. I'm only on episode 4 and I started once all the episodes were out.
This had a huge budget, what did they spend it on?
The material gave them a thousand interesting directions they could have gone, but they came up with this garbage. Really disappointing so far.

Was in same boat as you. Stopped around episode 5. Just so many dumb scenes and dialogue

you will probably like it if you have poor taste and/or low standards. if not, its best to avoid.

I started watching it but was turned off because everything was shiny and bright. I guess I preferred Hosue of Dragon which is dark and dirty...in comparison

Our family is enjoying it.
Amazon obviously spent a huge sum on the production.
The scenery is gorgeous, and the costumes are beautifully done.
The plot is a bit confusing at first due to the various factions but it comes together by the end for season 1.

Shocking how different those 2 shows are...RoP definitely a "clean" show that you can watch with your kids...HoD on the other hand, just unreasonably filty AND dark (like GoT)...

Absolutely not unless you enjoy terribly written, acted, and paced tv.
If you like Cheetoh volcanos, last minute saves galore coupled with a series of ridiculous coincidences, this show is definitely for you.

Not as good as Peter Jackson Trilogy (but that’s a very high bar and he has the better source material) but it’s good.

It's fine, corny at times with some weird cinematic elements but not as bad as The Hobbit movies. I'll continue to watch it when it comes back out but am not super invested in it.

Looks pretty. That is the best you can say for it.
The story is terrible and makes almost no sense even if you know nothing about the lore.
Example - Galadriel jumps off a boat in the absolute middle of nowhere and I guess just expects to swim all the way home without being eaten? Dumb stuff like that happens throughout the show.
Acting is mostly bad. Really poor writing and pacing. Very small battles. Poor directing.
And before the defenders of the show chime in.... shut up, you know the Harfoots are the worst characters in a long time. Every minute spent with them is agony.
