Flights are booked (BA), and now looking for hotels/VRBO.

It's just the wife and I, so any suggestions on things to do would be greatly appreciated.

I've stayed at the Eden Hotel which is close to a lot of the sights including the city center and Sofitel Legend at Grand Amsterdam which was a short walk to the city center and Anne Frank House

That'll be tulip season or around that time, so definitely make plans to head out to tulip fields.

You definitely should do a rijsttafel one night. Indonesian food is huge in Amsterdam and it is a really cool experience. There are ton of restaurants to choose from that do them.

Wife, toddler & I tried a return trip (along with Bruges) in April 2020, but Covid nixed it for us...

Depending on your length of stay, visits to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum & Anne Frank Huis will likely all be worthwhile. Book tickets in advance, especially for Anne Frank Huis.

I'd argue much of your time should be spent on two wheels. Mike's Bike Tours does a great countryside bike tour that gets you out of the downtown area stopping at windmills, cheese farms, etc. Vondelpark is a great spot to spend an afternoon or two relaxing whether you've had edibles or not.

Your timing is also perfect for the tulip gardens at Keukenhof which was going to be a treat for my wife & little one. Only open March-May.

Other eat/drink spots we enjoyed were:
Tales & Spirits
Whisky Cafe
Brouwerij t'IJ
Cafe de Wetering

The two AirBnb's we booked in 2014 & 2020 aren't showing up on the site anymore so no help there unfortunately, but spots near Leidseplein, Herenstraat, or in the Jordaan area are all good choices.

Have fun planning the trip & Raider Pride!

I can recommend a lot of things but they generally won't be touristy stuff. Here is my google map of amsterdam with my favorite places marked in yellow and you can see the majority of them are outside the City center/canal ring. The center and canal ring are great but generally very crowded with tourists, but in April it should be much better than when we typically are there in the summer.

Rent a bike
eat herring from a herring stand
hit some street markets
walk the canals at night
Take the free ferry across the Amstel to Noordilicht (sp) cafe and MDSM, a huge former ship building warehouse now full of artist studios
Vondel Park- go to the Blue Teahouse in the park for a beer
De Pijp neighborhood is full of bars and restaurants and is a more locals scene
Overtoom Road, the area we usually stay, is also a more locals bar/restaurant scene. Kartika on Overtoom is one of the best Indonesian restaurants in the city. Gollem is a great spot for beers, Cafe Eberling is great for coffee and snacks or breakfast.

Amsterdam has made ABnBs pretty much illegal. They still exists but there are many restrictions on them now.

We stayed at The Hoxton and thought it was nice enough.

I'm not one to focus on touristy things, but the Anne Frank house is a must do.

We stayed at the Kimpton deWitt which is near most of the sights and a short walk from the train station. They also have free bikes and a free wine hour each night.

I booked through AmEx hotel collection which got us free breakfast as well as a few other things.

I get both sides of the argument, but sad to hear this. Both our spots we booked in town were picturesque locations on canals. Our 2014 spot on Weteringschans was one of my favorite home bases in Europe.

Thanks, Zappas.

We prefer the “local” stuff, so this is great!

Our Dear Lord in the Attic is a cool catholic church hidden in a warehouse. From 1663 when Protestants ruled the city and it was illegal to be catholic. It is impressive the way it was built. Almost like a maze in a warehouse.

Van Gogh museum was really good. Anne Frank was too crowded for me. Get some Fenugreek cheese at a farmer's market.

OK, Here are some more obscure things to do.

Westergas Park is a new park built on the site of an old gas works just north of the canal zone. It is a nice park but also has cafes and restaurants within the park. Troost Brewery is a local place with good beer and a cool atmosphere. Rainari is a great North African restaurant.
Just beyond Westergas is Old Farm which is a working farm that employs mentally disabled people. They have a cafe that is great for lunch and even though you are surrounded by the city, you would never know it sitting on the patio and looking out over pastures.
Now if you really want to get obscure, in the same area is Tuinpark Zonnehoek which is a Garden allotment area where people rent a plot and grow their own veggies or just have an ornamental garden. Many plots have sheds that people live in during the summer. It is a very peaceful area in the middle of the city.

I've got a bunch more I'll post later.

I'll echo the rent a bike for sure. bike traffic is kinda fun. ride it in vondelpark. def check out the Indonesian food as well. walk down the red light district if you haven't just so you can see what it's like (it's nothing great).

we went around that time of the year and went to the tulip festival at the keukenhof. was pretty cool.

Thanks, Zappas!

We decided on The Hendrick for the hotel. Seems cool...and close enough to everything.

Appreciate all the suggestions.

Out of curiosity (planning a trip through AMS next year) why did you choose BA over Delta?

I second the recommendation for Our Lord In the Attic. Also the Van Gogh museum. If you go to the Riksmuseum hire a tour guide.

You have to book tickets to the Anne Frank house about 2 months in advance. It is worth seeing.

Take the short train ride to Gouda to see the cheese market if it is open while you are there.

Take a bike tour in the countryside. We ended up seeing the inside of a windmill on our tour.

A short train ride to Rotterdam is fun and can include a trip to the last church at which the Pilgrims worshipped before leaving to pick up the English contingent and sailing to America.

Restaurant Divan is an excellent Turkish restaurant. Highly recommended.

Thank you!

I think we are planning on doing Gouda; definitely doing a bike tour.
