I guess Derrick Davis and Sage Ryan just aren’t who we thought they would be

I think everyone thought they would be our starting safeties sooner than later unless Davis made the move to OLB because of his size but neither guy has seen the field much or played well when they have. Wouldn’t be shocked if Davis transferred back closer to home up north.

It's not an exact science, for sure
Just get better

They could just take longer to get ready. Neither of them transferred when they easily could have, so I won’t shite on them

Sage Ryan 1) shouldn’t have been a 5 star 2) plays a ton in the slot 3) had an injury all last year 4) is getting better with each rep in my opinion. He’s strong against the run.
Davis should play Lb. Doesn’t move well enough at his size to play safety. Also I don’t think anyone expected Davis to be a starter this year. It was always going to be some combination of Brooks, Ward, Burns, and Foucha

I trust that this coaching staff is putting the best players on the field.
Transfer portal available for those who can't compete at this level.

Said it all here. Kid just needs some time. He's flashed a few times, and I think a full year healthy and practicing will see good return on investment.

Help me understand Ryan.
He's not undersized. When first recruited, he was advertised at 4.5 forty type speed.
Does he not have the physical tools we thought?
Is he having problems figuring out his assignments?
What are the issues?
I am not dumping on the young man, but I do not understand why he is falling so short of expectations, even taking into account his injury issues.
Put differently, I can see he was not a five star, but what did we get wrong about him?

His problem: Lost in coverage. Doesn't know his assignments or just lacks instincts. I don't know. He has been lost since he has been here. When he's on the field if I was an offense I'd target him every time in coverage.
LSU is recruiting a ton of S in the upcoming recruiting class and next year. That should tell right there how confident they feel in the depth at S. So yeah, don't be surprised if you get more transfers there.

I remember another 5 star safety we had that took a few years to become a starter. Everything finally clicked for him and he ended up being a pretty solid player for us in his junior and senior seasons. So if it can happen for JaCoby Stevens, then it could possibly happen for these two as well.

He just shouldn't have been a 5 star.
Sage ryan is always lost on where he should be.

Ryan is smaller than his listed size. When he moved on to campus there was a few pictures of him standing next to Langlois and he looked about 2 inches shorter and 20 LBS lighter. His testing numbers were verified numbers, and they were really good but he doesn’t seem to play to that speed. His HS used him all over the field including featuring him in their offense. He’s probably still adjusting.
Davis was also featured at RB and I wonder if he isn’t better off playing that side of the ball. He’s outgrowing S before he even gets the chance to develop into a player at the position. Moving to Lb will probably be difficult.

He’s not? He looks tiny out there.

Be patient as they continue to work hard and get better
Hendon Hooker didn't become a great player until he was 24 years old
Joe Burrow also had a slow start.

Some are never awesome. Some never contribute at all. You sign 25 and 1/4 you might not ever hear from, even on special teams.

Exactly. Anyone remember Debo Jones? Stud LBer and he didn’t even sniff the field til junior year and blew up as a senior. Not every 17 year old high schooler is SEC ready, regardless of talent and potential

5’11” 193 ? Huh. He looks every bit of that.

Bootleggers personnel was adamant Langlois was the better player than Sage
On3 actually had Langlois near a top 100 recruit and ranked higher than Sage
Many felt Derrick Davis was a better RB prospect than safety. Corey Raymond wanted Gilbert over Davis but O made that call.

I said the same thing about Sage. I was like this guy wasn’t worth all of that signing day drama he stirred up but as a late the coaching staff has put him out there in the slot and he’s gaining more and more confidence.
