I think he actually was thinking about neutron bombs, but that is a damn sight different than making a blanket statement like this.
But, by all means, follow the sciencers.

Modern nukes are certainly more efficient/less dirty
But to say there is absolute no fallout is silly

I saw that too and wondered wtf he was talking about. Do fusion/fission bombs produce less fallout than purely fission bombs... yes but how much less depends on a number of factors. But not zero fallout.
Also I've noticed lately he sometimes get easily agitated in interviews and guest spots. It really weird and off putting.

NDT did not phrase his position well, and it did not help that Maher was playing the clown, but he was trying to say that modern nukes are MUCH cleaner than Fat Man and Little Boy. That is objectively true.

i heard NDT on Opie and Anthony like ten years ago, and I liked him then because he was genuinely interesting. that was before he realized he could become uber famous and rich by being the "science dude" behind whatever leftist dish du jour was being served up.

Less dirty? A nuc is a nuc. U-235 or Pu-239. Fission, radioactive decay products.
Somebody else posted maybe it’s a neutron bomb, no fallout. The neutron bomb is fallout, kills all the people without the blast to preserve infrastructure. Kill people with radiation then move in.
NDT should know this, or so I would have thought. If not, he’s a quack and hack. I know he is relative to climate change.
A tactical nuc just has less yield than ICBMs with MIRVs.
