Science: Major Gamma Ray Burst Detected

Astronomers just detected what may be the most powerful flash of light ever seen.
The so-called gamma-ray burst, the most energetic type of electromagnetic explosion known to exist in the universe, was first spotted by telescopes Sunday (Oct. 9).
The flash detected Sunday was the strongest one ever observed, releasing 18 teraelectronvolts of energy.
Subsequent analyses of the signal confirmed that it was indeed a gamma-ray burst coming from a source some 2.4 billion light-years away. While not exactly nearby, the gamma-ray burst is still the closest ever seen.
Although this gamma-ray burst was within a safe distance from Earth, a much closer one would be catastrophic to our planet. Such an energetic flash within thousands of light-years from Earth would strip the planet of its protective ozone layer and likely cause mass extinction.

Probably would make electric cars unusable. Another reason not to own one.

I’ve seen bigger flashes in the quad.

The life force we are a tiny part of is finally starting cancer treatment.
See you all later.

when that thing blew up, the Earth was completely covered by water

Wouldnt this explosion have happened 2.4 billion years ago if that far away?

Crawfish prices would go up for sure.

There is a sci fi short story about something like that.
Scientists detected some save of radiation coming our way, it was millions of years old, they were excited. Unfortunately, it incinerated the earth.

Could the sun just explode at any moment?

Doc Bruce Banner was hit by Gamma Rays. Look what happened to him!

No, the sun isn't big enough to go supernova. Sol will exist for about 10 billion years more, and then go through its death throes as it gradually increases in size incinerating Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars.

You like Auburn so I dont trust your assessment/judgement
