From a recent NOLA.com article:

quote:

Yes, that's right; the Green Wave was an SEC charter member, along with Georgia Tech and Sewanee. Tulane left the conference in 1965 for independence — a move that current athletic director Troy Dannen said "looks worse by the day."

Here's the real reason they left the SEC:

quote:

Tulane did not win more than one SEC game in any season from 1957-65.

quote:

The Tulane rivalry was also devolving into a dirty affair with intense bitterness on the field and in the stands. Some games were embarrassing and simply no longer fun.

The Great Tiger Rag of 1938 was LSU and Tulane fans, players, and coaches fighting each other after the game with frozen sugar cane stalks in what is now the South Stadium Parking Lot.

I was in the Student Section for the final time when this happened:

Tulane should have stayed in the SEC.

Had they stayed, they would be what Vanderbilt is to Tenn. for us.

we've played Southern exactly once.
LSU should open up every season with Southern or Grambling just for the half-time show.

It's an easy opening "practice" game to work out the kinks and the fans have a reason to stay in their seats to be entertained at the half...........

TF i was talking about.

Sounds intense. I'd pay to see this.

I mean....we wouldn't even need a school if we didn't have a football team...right? Haha!

Like I said, I agree about not playing in their cute little on-campus stadium. But the Dome every other year should be a go.

How does this benefit LSU with the gate demands that Tulane insists upon?

Too bad LSU lost the game 14-0. 1938 was my Dad's freshman year at LSU, but I don't think he was at the game. I may ask him next time I see him, but his memory has somewhat faded so I doubt he remembers. He definitely remembers the 1950 Sugar Bowl when LSU's Cinderella Season was quashed by Darrell Royal and the Oklahoma Sooners 35-0.

Tulane's greed ruined this rivalry always wanting more money and not wanting to do a 2 for 1 (2 in BR and 1 in Nola). Back in the 80's this was a nasty rivalry growing up Nola. It's sad that the green weenies never put any money into their program until recently with the stadium.

I think you missed the point of the entire thread. Let me explain…no, there is not enough time…I’ll summarize:

LSU doesn’t mind playing Tulane every year and even put forth a plan that would allow it. Tulane didn’t like the plan and told LSU to go pound sand. LSU said “ok…..good luck to you and yours”.

Though I am 1000% against renewing a series with the weenies, for all the reasons listed here, I will say that the best teams fight was...forgetting the year....when the officials actually called the game over when there was still minutes left on the clock. Both benches cleared & there were knock down fights all over the field, especially in the north endzone. Not the shoving & pushing around kind of fights, fists & helmets flying everywhere kind of fight. Best on the field fight ever in Tiger Stadium.

I'll be honest here - I just had to comment 'cause I like your screen name. Ethan Martin was one of my all time favorite players at LSU. I still remember him driving Joe B. Hall and his Kentucky Wildcats insane because they couldn't dribble the ball anywhere near him for fear of him stealing it and going the other way in a hurry.

Sorry for the completely off-topic remark, but I just had an awesome flashback of some great memories from the early 80s. So, thanks for that!
