Left-Wing Houston Chronicle Endorsed Challenger to Harris County's Democrat County Judge

And it's got leftists in Texas all triggered now. From one media outlet, the Texas Signal:

SILLY SEASON TAKES A STRANGE TURN IN HARRIS COUNTY
Harris County political observers were left to scratch their heads this week when the Houston Chronicle announced their endorsement in the race for Harris County Judge, giving their nod to Republican Alexandra Del Moral Mealer.
The political newcomer Mealer has padded her campaign war chest with millions of dollars in contributions from mega-donors and county contractors that Hidalgo has refused to take contributions from. Even still, Mealer has run a disciplined if deceptive campaign centered largely around crime, which is central to the Chronicle’s rationale.
It poses a challenging question in races for these critical executive seats: does accomplishment really matter?
Hidalgo has led Harris County with skill and poise through crisis after crisis. She provided leadership on the vote for voting rights in Texas, steered Harris County through everything from hurricanes to chemical fires, and took life-saving action during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The incumbent has also staked out a far more nuanced position on crime than her opponents would suggest. While Harris County has struggled with some of the same issues with crime that other major cities are facing, the county has increased its law enforcement budget every year under Hidalgo’s leadership to date, and crime has begun to come down, though not quickly enough.
quote:
At every turn, Hidalgo has put Harris County first. Her work has made Harris County safer and more resilient and has helped put the county on a path that invests in the future of every resident. That’s the type of leadership Texans should be proud of, not spreading lies about.

Lest we forget, just earlier this summer:
quote:
Three employees of Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo have been indicted by a grand jury on charges related to how they helped award a contract for COVID-19 vaccine outreach last year.
The Harris County district clerk lists two felony counts each for chief of staff Alex Triantaphyllis, policy director Wallis Nader and former policy aide Aaron Dunn. The charges are misuse of official information and tampering with a government record.
The charges add weight to a scandal Hidalgo has attempted to dismiss as politically motivated, and they threaten to tarnish her carefully cultivated image as an ethically minded public servant as she seeks reelection this year. Hidalgo is widely seen as a rising star in the Texas Democratic Party and a future statewide candidate.

how anyone could actually sit down and write positive things about Lina Hidalgo is beyond me. she is horrible.

Absolutely everything she touched became a dumpster fire.

Is she going to get re-elected?

It will be close, but more than likely yes
Beto will save her again by being on the ballot lol

Is that idiotic auto down-ballot voting option still a thing for Texas?
That's one of the big reasons Hildalgo won in the first place. Biden voters flocked to the polls to vote against mean Donald Trump, and in the process, many just lazily selected the auto-Democrat slate. Suddenly a horribly unqualified candidate for what is effectively the CEO of all of Harris County was put in charge.
EDIT: Brood corrected me. She was on the ballot when Cruz and Beto ran in '18.

Hildago wasn’t on that election. It was Cruz vs beto for senate when she won the first time

no it isnt and she won in 2018 because of Cruz vs Beto
hidalgo stopped campaigning a week ago and disappeared from public view
she has outlived her usefulness to the machine and is being cast aside, good riddance to Judge Dora The Explorer

Judge Emmett led Houston through Harvey, he just got beaten by down balloting.

She is a total waste of oxygen.

I'M SO CONFUSED BECAUSE A MEDIA GROUP DIDN'T LOCK STEP WITH OUR DEMOCRATS. WHY WOULD THEY ENDORSE A REPUBLICAN.

can't decide whether I'm more excited to vote for Mealer or Abbott in November

What's their angle? There's no way an actual newspaper is supporting a Republican. There has to be something else at play.

i view Harris county elections as why we did away with down ticket ballots.
the county had no idea they were removing Ed Emmit (who from all accounts was very non-partison) i think.
it also brought in black girl magic. if you ever want an infuriating read, the texags houston board has an on going "city under siege" thread where they just post about violence by people out on parole from all the area's judges.
