Did you think movies would be "back" by now?

Before the pandemic, there was at least one movie at any given time that I was interested in going to the theater to see. Now, months can pass with no interest.
Is the movie industry just still recovering or have times forever changed?

I mean, the movies mostly suck this year. Top Gun Maverick proved it can be done.

The products they're putting out ooze suckage

Until the film industry decides they want to take risks with original, creative ideas, I’m out.
So sick and fricking tired of superhero movies, remakes, and sequels.

100% with you on this. Since the pandemic the quality has dropped dramatically and there is very little newer content out there that is catching my eye.

This. Top Gun was the first thing in a while that I thought there was no way I was missing out on seeing this on the big screen. Stop making crap and people will go see it.

Changed forever
There's just very little reason to go see non-event movies in theaters when most people these days can buy 65in TV's for $600 or watch on a HDR ipad with high quality headphones. Not to mention the meteoric rise in streaming and big budget TV.
I expect films like Avatar 2 to kill it, as will your Marvel's and Star Wars, but the years of 65-80 films a year breaking 100 million worldwide at the BO, I dont think that is coming back

They would be if there were more great ones available to view

Black Panther 2 and Avatar will be "event" type movies.
There's a few Oscar-bait movies that I'm looking forward to.
But the theater is pretty quiet these days when I go. The front ticket booth isn't even manned anymore at the theater by me. You have to go inside to the concession to buy tickets (or use the app).

People now know that every film will hit streaming or PPV at a highly accelerated rate. We're still getting great films, but they're now presented as a part of a massive glut of streaming content, so they're no longer "special".

Honestly most of the movies have sucked lately

Going directly to streaming has affected that. I mean, I would go see Halloween this weekend but it's free on Peacock.

I personally believe that everything has shifted to streaming. As someone who used to love going to the movies, I have very little desire to go sit in a theater. Plus, there's hardly any movies that I'm really fired up to see these days..

There are very few movies released every year that watching in a theater adds to the experience. You are basically paying money to see it a month sooner than you could for no added cost on your couch at your own leisure. Its just not worth it anymore.

As long as it’s good, I don’t care if it’s a remake or sequel. Maverick was legit.

At-Home-Streaming aleady had theaters in the ER. The pandemic put theater-going in the ICU, on life support, but it's not dead...yet.
As stale as they are, billion dollar CGI/Action blockbusters/eye-candy spectacles are about the only reliable seat-fillers which leaves the rest of the 10-to-20 theater screens relatively empty. That is an unsustainable business model.
Audiences aren't compelled to see a drama or comedy on a big screen, when it loses no entertainment value on a home HDTV, especially when the lower price, pausable bathroom/snack breaks, & no crowd of strangers are factored in.

The pandemic threw off production schedules greatly. The insanely bad numbers at the box office now is a direct result of that.
They put out everything they had worth seeing in the summer.
The last few months of releases have been the worst in modern history. The cupboard is bare until Xmas season.

Unfortunately, there's more at play than just a scamdemic.
