Huge influential musical icon or another also ran from the star studded lineup of musicians from the 70’s-80’s. I always perceived TP and the Heartbreakers and Tom Petty solo as being major artists of their era. This is kind of a spin-off of the Tom Petty thread on the SEC Rant. Others seem to think he was just a somewhat talented dude who showed up in a couple of Stevie Nick’s videos back in the day.

Hard Promises is hugely underrated. I listen to it more than Damn the Torpedoes though that's solid as well.

It was a slow burn from initial stardom to legendary status, but Petty definitely got there. Of all the big "Americana" rock artists, Springsteen, Bob Seger, Steve Miller, John (Cougar) Mellencamp, I think Petty's body of work stands above them all.
Just setting aside that Campbell and Tench could have played with literally anybody of that era, the songs were great songs that other folks wanted to record. Stevie Nicks wanted to be a Heartbreaker, FFS, and she is responsible for squillions of record sales of that era.

So literally every time I go on a road trip , be it 3 hours from Houston to family in Louisiana, or a 19 hour couple of day trip to Colorado, “into the great wide open” album is played from start to finish and more than once on the Colorado trip. That is the perfect road trip in a car. If you’ve never done it make it happen!!

You put what I wanted to say into words better than I could have. Those are the guys I'd compare him to and he's at or near the top of his style of rock.

As far as my ears go, there's a wide gap between him and the others. I can't stand Springsteen and can take or leave the other three.
Petty did his own thing, stayed true to his sound, and was as popular in the Grunge era of the 90s as he was in the Disco era of the 70s or the New Wave days of the 80s.

He and the Heartbreakers are some of the greatest true American rockers. Just hands down good music from start to finish, and including solo Petty and the Traveling Wilburys.

You Got Lucky is one of the rare absolutely perfect songs. The lyrics, guitar solo, etc. just work so well together. He was a great American artist with great taste in music too. Still listen to buried treasure on sirius/xm whenever i can.

I saw him live at the Warehouse as a back up band to the Kinks. I also saw his band years later at UNO; they were outstanding.
