Analysis reveals growing shortages - particularly in rural areas - since the pandemic. The figures show that on average, there is now one NHS dentist per 6,849 people in England - down from one per 6,667 in 2019. Even in the areas with the most NHS dentists, there is less than one NHS dentist per 1,000 people.

Ashfield in Nottinghamshire has the lowest number of dentists, with just one per 16,129 people, the data from July to September shows.
quote:
The areas with the most NHS dentists for their population are almost all in London, and surrounding counties. The City of London fairs best with one per 1,215, while Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea and Hammersmith and Fulham all near the top of the list.
quote:
21 per cent carried out their own dental work or asked someone who was not a dentist to do so.
quote:
Councils are in charge of running programmes to promote good oral health and prevent problems, particularly among children, while NHS dentists are commissioned by NHS England.
quote:
Eddie Crouch, the chairman of the British Dental Association, said: “The Government must be more ambitious in its plans to reform NHS dentistry. “To save this service we need real commitment – root-and-branch reform and adequate funding.“

Gotta wonder what the private dentists cost. The NHS is running dentists off apparently due to broken contracts.

This is pretty shocking.
I had no idea there were any dentists in England.

It’s about $70-80 a general cleaning. I know, I lived there nearly a decade. However, the process is not very thorough as it is here.

I’m not sure what is worse their teeth or their food.

Hasn’t it been this way since the days of the Anglo-Saxon kings?

To be honest we seem to be heading in that direction where I am. The wait time for an appointment is around 4-6 months unless you get lucky and there is a cancelation. I don't know if it's people catching up from putting it off because of Covid or if it's a shortage of dentists in my hometown but the wait times are much longer now

The Big Book of British Smiles
There's a dentist on every corner in Baton Rouge. I don't know how they earn a living there are so many of them here.

This is all part of the plan.
Lower reimbursement so no one will go into it. Then say we'll see need to allow non dentists to do much of the work of dentists.
You don't actually need a dentist to pull your tooth. We can have Joe down the street who we trained right out of grade school to just pull teeth. Since that is all he does, he will be better than a dentist!
And they are doing the same thing with doctors as well.

And use it as an excuse to lower standards—to be more inclusive! Equity!! REEEEEEEE!

The reimbursement rate is awful. So many are trying to get off the DHS system and just be private pay. I'm thinking these numbers are DHS serving dentists so this is not shocking at all. What's the point of the schooling if you are making 50k a year and dealing with beaurocratic BS ?

Not surprising. The NHS is arse. It's severely under funded.
I don't know how, when they pay slave wages and ration services, but it's still underfunded.
NHS pay scale.
Band 1* £20,270
Entry step point Years until eligible for pay progression Top step point
Band 2 £20,270 2 £21,318
Band 3 £21,730 2 £23,177
Band 4 £23,949 3 £26,282
Entry step point Years until eligible for pay progression Intermediate step point Years until eligible for pay progression Top step point
Band 5 £27,055 2 £29,180
Nursing is the only degree that women get in mass in the United States that actually pays well. Imagine if we paid nurses this little. The feminist would be in the streets.
A Band 5 registered nurse is making 30k. That's after years of raises.
I wouldn't even want a nurse who would accept a 30k salary to look after me .

My suspicions are correct. I have dentists friends that say it's basically a joke. No wonder half are leaving the NHS

England has a large nursing shortage.
Since they have socialized medicine the Government decides how much nurses are paid.
They pay nurses less than teachers and store clerks and it is a tougher job so there is a shortage.
Probably the cause for the dentist shortage as well.

They lose 10s of thousands of Nurses and doctors to the United States, Australia and Canada every year because of the low pay.
They are trying to stop it by not having their medical professionals accredited by a certain world organization so they can't practice in America
UK scheming to save their Drs from America.

That is what happens when you put government in charge of health care.

Yes Nurses there can make as little as 13 pounds per hour.
