What new things did you learn after being hit by a hurricane?

Learned about back feeding my house with a portable generator after Katrina. We spent almost three weeks away from the house after it passed. It's nice to get back and get things done in the aftermath.
Being prepared can make life easier after a storm. Was home the entire time after IDA hit, made it nice that we didn't have to worry about finding a place to stay afterwards. Generator definitely makes it doable.
After Ida, I also learned my neighbor behind me is a complete nut job. Good fences make good neighbors.

That "Hurricane Fridge" is the worst smell ever. And that if Hell is real, it must be a smelly place.

I relearned that 99% of the people in this world are incredible.

I learned you should probably evacuate and do so
earlier rather than later.
earlier rather than later.

Used to think it was fun as a kid. Hate it as an adult
Never evacuated for a hurricane until Ida. Now, I’m leaving anytime we get one. Especially with kids

When Ida was about to hit us last year, a co-worker of mine said "It's all fun and games until you actually own shite."

Me too, funny what responsibilities do to you..

Hurricane parties are awesome. You become an alcoholic. You sweat your arse off. You work your arse off. You constantly smell gasoline and hear the hmmmm of generators. And you love window units

Evacuate.
The sooner the better.
And if your job gives you any static about you evacuating, quit your job.

It is always dead still air and hot arse frick the week after a hurricane. Also if they have any swampy areas with in 30 miles it will have an ungodly stench from getting stirred up.

Learned that after Katrina.
If powers been off for a week by the time you get back home, just tape the fridge up and wheel it out to the street. LOL

I’ve done hurricane response for about 10-11 hurricanes now. I’ll say never underestimate the benefits of dehumidifiers and fans. Do everything you can to get the moisture content down as soon as you can.
People laugh at homes with the roofs strapped down, but I’m an absolute believer in it. I think it’s a very affordable safety measure that can save a home. Never understood why more people don’t do it.

Always wonder if a tarp on a strapped down roof would work to save shingles.

This. It's not worth dealing with. Pack a go bag with all your important paper docs, pack a week of clothes, and leave.

If you had damages beyond your deductible, contact your lawyer before calling your insurance co.

That was my big take after Ida, both residence & business properties.
Also learned that if you remove every 6th board before the storm, it may actually save your fence. Had several people tell me they did that and didn't have fence damage. Definitely giving that a shot next storm

Learned it the hard way after Katrina. I walk into be mother in law's house, and my brother in law flings the fridge open. The smell hits me, and I immediately go outside to start puking.

Didn’t need as much water as I thought. FEMA brings a lot of that
Needed more roofing nails than I thought.
Needed to be in better shape than I thought
Needed a home generator which I now have
Cash is helpful in getting workers
