Which year was that?

Because Utah 2004 is the first non-BCS team to win a BCS bowl. People forget it b/c of what Boise did 2 years later

2001, with David Carr at QB. They were ranked #8 when Boise beat them.

BYU was very good the same year and was actually undefeated much longer than Fresno, but their schedule was much weaker. IIRC Gary Crowton even suggested the BCS should be sued if his team went undefeated and didn't go to a BCS bowl.

They ended up getting blasted by Hawaii in the last game of the season to end the BCS talk. Hawaii also beat Fresno the week after Fresno lost to Boise, which allowed Louisiana Tech to win the WAC.
