It’s very stupid to be so stubborn at this point.
Gregg has done a good job of phasing out players who aren’t playing well or are just not good enough (Seb Lletget, Jackson Yueill) and bringing in young talents (Musah, Dest, Pepi when in form).
Brooks being frozen out never made much sense although his form dipped, so there was an explanation.
Pefok has been in great form though.

Seems impossible that he would still leave Pefok at home. I also am a big Jesus guy, but he just is too damn small for international play, especially with the way we like to get it wide to Dest, A Rob, and Weah and send in crosses.

Besides Pefok, there is a valid explanation for all of his omissions.
Pefok is by far the most productive striker though, and it’s a weak position. Ferreira is good against minnows and small sides. He does strike me as a guy who will not score much if he joins a sub-par Bundesliga side.
Meanwhile we have a top 10 Bundesliga striker

So just how ugly was the match?
Posted on 9/23/22 at 12:41 pm to sms151t
One of the uglier performances of the GGG era
Posted on 9/23/22 at 12:48 pm to sms151t
How ugly? 0 shots on goal, 2nd slowest ball progression of the GGG era, 2nd only to the 3-0 disasterclass vs Mexico in 2019. Our only legit chance was a cross that went to our striker that is charitably listed as 5'9".

Well, we got our wish for Long to look like shite.
I want to see Mark McKenzie in the 11 next match because we desperately need a distributor to pair with Zimmerman. But in reality, we need Chris Richards healthy and in some semblance of form in two months, if not we're pretty much fricked.
Long may have played himself off the roster today.

Again, Pefok should be in camp, but if he was there today, I don't think that fixes out shots on target issue today.
He's reliant on service, and there simply wasn't any because our midfield was pure a-hole.

Having just finished the match, I can't decide if Long or McKennie was our worse player today.
McKennie literally giftwrapped Japan's first goal and many more chances after that. And even worse, whenever he made a bad turnover, he sulked instead of running back.

When so many players look bad its time to look at the coach and his beloved "system".

Mckennie sulk
Here's a great example of what you're describing

Sure, but probably what would come out from looking at that is that the system largely benefits our best players, the coach just needs to quit some other players (Long) and get some others healthy.
We learned midway through qualifying that Musah is absolutely crucial in the midfield because Adams' passing is below average and McKennie's passing outside of the attacking third is reckless at best, insane at worst. Musah fixes so many of the issues we had today.
You also absolutely need someone out of the back to be able to be calm on the ball and be able to play a linebreaking pass every now and then. With Zimmerman and Turner locked into the XI, the other CB has to be able to pass the ball... that's not Aaron Long nor will it ever be Aaron Long. He provides no value to this roster outside of a veteran locker room presence, which doesn't matter if you're losing matches directly because of his play.
Richards, CCV, McKenzie, Ream, EPB are all better options and it's not even remotely close.

John Herdman for manager.

Two quick takes.
1. France didn't look good four years ago when our team going no where tied them 1-1 and they lifted the cup.
2. GGG is getting roasted by the pundits of Sirius soccer.

Hey now, I've been told he is fast. Which helps if you are getting beat on every play after you turn the ball over.

Deservedly so. Him not calling in Pefok for the last two games before the World Cup is inexcusable regardless if he would have made a difference in the game today. His excuses for not calling him in were retarded as well. He needs to understand that as an international manager your system needs to be adjustable. You have a limited player pool and need to adjust your system based on the players available. It’s not like club soccer where you can go out and buy the players that fit your system.
