Shows that had bad first seasons and turned out great

I love Seinfeld, but those first 2 seasons are just awful. Aside from 1 or 2 episodes, I don’t even enjoy rewatching them. I am surprised the show lasted long enough to see season 3, where it really starts to take off.
What are other good examples of shows that start really slow but go on to be great?

Seinfeld was going to be my choice when I saw the thread title. If I see reruns on TV and its a S1 or 2 episode I don't watch.
Parks and Rec is another, although in retrospect years later, season 1 is fine.

Does the first 3 episodes of Black Sails count as a 'bad first season'?

Halt and Catch Fire comes to mind
The Leftovers sort of as well
Black Sails somewhat too.

I disagree with both of you. Seinfeld S1 only had five episodes and P&R only had six. That is somewhat common for new shows trying to find their way. Both had some solid episodes and P&R year one was excellent. The Banquet where Leslie gets the man haircut and everyone thinks Ann is her girlfriend is hilarious. Mark banging Shauna Malwee-Tweep in The Reporter was also great. P&R year one was second best year ever. The show jumped the shark pretty early by making the characters too silly and the episodes too over the top.

may not count since "reality" but, Big Brother's first season was incredibly bad. Was pretty good for maybe 10 seasons after that. then went to shite again.

Seinfeld truly becomes Seinfeld in The Chinese Restaurant episode
ETA: Larry David said that NBC was totally against The Chinese Restaurant episode and begrudgingly green lit it expecting it to flop. The episode became an instant classic and NBC gave Larry David & Jerry Seinfeld carte blanche to do whatever they wanted for the rest of the series.

The office is pretty bad for the first season and a half.

I’m rewatching Parks & Rec right now and I laughed a lot towards the end of season 2. Until we meet Tammy, Ron is just another character in the office, and the show focuses on Leslie and Ann. After that, Ron becomes much more involved in the show. They tone Leslie’s weirdness down just a little. It really hits its stride towards the end of season 2.

Came here to say The Office US, but it was almost by design.
The Office (US) was written differently after the second season. When the writers realized that the show could last several seasons, they decided to make Michael more likable so viewers could tolerate him more. He was an absolute arse in the first season.
