Can someone please give me a compelling reason on why you think it's wrong for the chacater in the kids movie to be black?

Because it’s cultural appropriation

Which I thought wasn’t allowed in the woke world

Maybe because it looks like a terrible movie?

Wrong? Absolutely not.

It's the force feeding and blatant over representation of 13% of the population that grinds people's gears.

Frankly, the movie is about fish people. I could care less about it, but this was low hanging fruit for the woke crusaders.

Add to the fact, this girl is kind of ratchet looking. Not a big fan.

I don't think it's particularly woke (yet) and I don't really care either way

But I think the annoyance at a character who is universally understood to be white with red hair being turned into a black girl is understandable in an age where filming any piece of literature with a gay person, a black person, etc. without a person with those attributes is highly controversial.

In general I think the complaints are stupid, but I do think it's hypocritical Hollywood stuff. Maybe if I had a daughter looking forward to this and she was miffed that they changed the main character for diversity's sake I'd care a bit more.

I can only speak for myself here.

I don’t have a problem at all with a character being black. This girl is attractive and she’ll be easy on my eyes if/when I take my daughter to see this movie. No problem at all with her race.

What I do have a problem with, however, is Disney intentionally going out of their way to cast the mermaid actress as a black girl when the original was white. My daughter loves the mermaid so I showed her the preview a few days ago. She just stared at it with a look of confusion on her face. She could tell it was very different than what she’s used to. It’s supposed to be a remake but it’s not the same at all.

Intentionally casting the mermaid as a black girl is just as racist as only having white people in their movies. Having a black mermaid is not a problem at all. Intentionally having a black mermaid is a huge fricking problem, though. I’m not racist but I do recognize bullshite racism when I see it.

If they want to bring diversity to their screen, make new movies with black characters. Don’t remake original movies with black characters just to appease the woke crowd because it makes no sense.

It’s not “wrong” for the actor cast to be black. Nothing wrong with that in a normal world.

What’s wrong, however, is that if the original character would’ve been black and a white person would’ve been cast in this movie, the woke mob would’ve canceled the actor, movie, and Disney for making that choice.

It’s a double standard that is ruining Hollywood.

I don’t care what race, creed, orientation, or size an actor is because that’s what actors are supposed to do…play roles that are against type.

But when a white, straight, skinny person playing a role that isn’t just “white, straight, or skinny” they get incredible backlash, and that’s a major problem.

I think Amber Heard should play Rosa Parks.

Maybe Chris Pratt as MLK.

Look, if that’s the way you want to play it, fine.

No more white roles. No more black roles. Just Roles.

When you establish the look of a character, you can tweak it a bit but there are certain features.

This chick ain’t Ariel. They couldn’t make up their own mermaid story? Is there no African or Caribbean folklore that exists?

They had to take a Dutch story about a pale mermaid with gorgeous red hair and give her dreadlocks? Come the frick on.

The same people crying about “cultural appropriation” and blackface do it the most of all.

I tend to agree…. But I’m biased. Warner Bros is casting me as Michael Jordan in an upcoming biographical drama.

One can think it's a dumb cash grab geared towards woke morons without thinking it's morally wrong.

Because if I order a hamburger I don’t want them to deliver me one of those meatless burgers because they feel I should like that more.

I'll bite

When you comment on Disney stating "No new pilot pitches with > 50% white"

Are they gonna remake Black Panther with a white guy?

Disney is taking a side and America should too, IMO. No need to shun one side to appease another.

It's just lazy, low hanging fruit designed to "be progressive" merely for the sake of it.

It's a traditional story with a traditional cast of characters. People are just sick of the "let's make X character black because it's the moral thing to do" nonsense. It's just like making all the Ghostbusters women. That becomes the intended appeal of the story and not the actual story itself.

Because Ariel was white. Make a new character. Why are they appropriating all the white characters/roles?

Come up with a new fricking idea, how about that.

Should we just recast all the black characters as white people? That wouldn't upset anyone, would it?

Halle Berry is pretty light skinned, like all hot black chicks are. The problem is she’s too old to play Ariel.

It’s not. Pandering and “supporting the current thing” turns people off
