Good post. The mantis is indeed a bizarre animal. I like how they crank their head at you and regard you with those alien compound eyes.
Years ago I went to the insect museum at the Smithsonian and they had all these big arse Southern Hemisphere bugs on display, some were real monsters. At that scale you can really get a good look at them and they are freaky.
Like ants and wasps it's a good thing these frickers aren't three feet long or we would lose the great insect war.
Even seemingly benign bugs like lady bugs are vicious indiscriminate killers and cannibals. There's a whole micro war for survival going on at that level.

Didn’t know it but had a egg sack on a Christmas tree we cut down. Those frickers were everywhere one morning.

I’m a big fan of the mantis. Love seeing them in my garden. Here’s one on my olive tree about a week ago looking like I opened up the shower curtain and startled her.

And some of my favorite bugs to have around are robber flies. They catch a lot of flies.
My only problem with them is they’ll sit near my beehive and catch my girls. Found this one hanging on to my fence while eating one.

I don’t think spiders are insects but, orb-weavers are fascinating to me.

Giant walking sticks and prickly leaf insects are cool as hell.

Saw these two one day. When is the subject ever gonna come up again? So here they are.....
Used to live next to some swampy woods and when I'd go outside to smoke I'd see some truly weird insects on the fence and ground. Took pics occasionally, if I can find 'em on the 'ol HD I'll post 'em.

thats awesome. Ive yet to find any egg sacks in my yard. As many as we've hatched I think I would've seen one by now. I guess the lizards and birds get a ton of them

What’s wrong with my decor?
And I can’t find him this morning. So he hunts on. I hope to see him again.

Oh, I move them. That one was persistent, though. I finally had to take it to the back part of our property. It just kept coming back to the feeder.
Robber flies, the larger ones, will also attack Hummingbirds. I read a blog post about a woman in South Carolina prying one off of a Hummingbird once. I don't know that the robber flies can kill the birds the same way they do insects, but they can hold them until they starve or dehydrate.

So do Mantises bite? I’ve always handled them and never been bitten but i have had people tell me they will bite.
