Said they seemed to always ready to fire someone

Back in the 90's when I hired out on the first day of conductor training the instructor said "The railroad will spend $80k training you over the next 6 months and then spend the rest of your career trying to fire you."

They've always been pricks to work for but have gotten much worse over the past 10+ years. With the railroads that hired EHH leading the way.

CSX IT worker here, I work in corporate so don't see what the unions are doing and the field workers are up to. We did just let go over 150+ FTE people from operations and hired an Indian company to do most of the day to day work. Sad times around here. Only thing keeping me around is the RR retirement.

I haven't heard if the CSX union employees are part of this shut down.

You'll be away from home 75 percent of your life for the first ~10 years. If missing kids birthdays, games, holidays, etc. doesn't matter to you then it's a pretty good gig.

Given my situation that doesn't sound terrible. Thanks for the input.

Do other industries have job (wage) insurance available?

I haven't heard of it elsewhere but it's common on the rails.

Kind of telling when there are multiple outfits that have been in business over 100 years providing this.

nothing ever happens until it does, and then it was always going to happen.

My brother would say something very similar.

Yep, but they can kiss my retired arse now. I just want them to settle it and stick it to the railroads and get me my backtime pay.

Same here, the couple of people I know who work for railroads love it and say they are probably overpaid for what they do.

This is a lie. A true railroader is one of the unhappiest people on planet earth. It’s one of the most toxic work environments known to man.

Mayor Pete will rescue us.

But on a serious note some of this has to do with covid and layoffs. And of course it’s a hard job.

quote:

A year ago, this rail transportation company landed in the top 100 on Forbes’ list of the World's Best Employers, but now it’s losing love at a blistering pace. Norfolk Southern once offered many well-paying working-class jobs but recently cut 3,500 positions, The Washington Post reported in early 2020. It joins other railways that are reducing their operations amid a drop in demand for freight.

I have a friend that worked with a railroad company when he got out the Army. He said that the benefits were good ,but the pay was dogshit. He said if you are a young guy without a family it is not that bad ,but he had to move on cause the pay and opportunities weren't there.

shite list unless something changed over the past decade.

We called them Nazi Southern for a reason. Hated taking trains to their yards as the fricks were always laying in the weeds trying to bust you for breaking the most minor of rules. Hell, they'd banner test out in the middle of the yard at night. So I'd leave the headlights and ditchlights on the whole time. (You normally run with the headlights on dim at night in the yard. Can't see shite but you're not blinding everyone."

With the typical poor service the railroad provides, a strike may not have much impact.

They may be but no way my arse would want to be fricking about those rail cars on one of those 2 mile long trains. Seems like a good way to get dead.

we will draw on retirement.

Unions have been able to preserve pensions much better than non union positions. In fact, non-union pensions are probably non existent now.

So, bitch all yall want, but you can retire at a decent age and still be set.
Not so with others. Many, many people that have no pension to look forward to will probably have to work til they're 70 before they can retire.
