sounds like we're talking a couple of generations ago, RRs are pretty barebone, cutthroat pay and work rules these days

A list rating after 2020 when they had to shed jobs? Weak sauce. Look at the benefits and pay they have and stop asking people who were laid off.

Are people forced to work for these bad companies?

nope

ETA: but typically, if you have qualifications, you have choices and leverage, not always, supply and demand dictates this

In some places that might be the only real industry in town.

I'd like to have experienced engineers and conductors on board these two mile long monstrosities instead of what the majority of the cross country trucking industry has become - rookies training rookies because everyone quits when they find out how awful the industry is.

This must be part of the reason we are shutting down a paper machine for one to three weeks.

It's a middle-man industry, all you can do is cut costs to affect profits. Until someone busts out the cold fusion locomotive.

Is being a conductor really that awful? UP says they can make nearly $90k a year driving a train and entry level is pretty close to what I make working in a plant right now, and I have no upward trajectory in my current role.

I thought most RRs have eliminated that position?

not that simple, we have to stay if we want 100% of our RR retirement and benefits. It's too good once we are vested to walk away from. what most don't know, that the wife will get half of what we will draw on retirement. The unions set it up that way because we are away from home so much, it's called a widow's pension.

They haven't...yet. Feds were not on board with that idea because of the safety aspect of one person behind in the cab of a two mile train. Something happens to the engineer then you've got a stupid amount of things that can happen.

You'll be away from home 75 percent of your life for the first ~10 years. If missing kids birthdays, games, holidays, etc. doesn't matter to you then it's a pretty good gig.
