Railroad Unions are ready to shut it all down

Railroads begin embargoes on hazardous materials in preparation for possible work stoppage
Look up the list of worst employers in the United States and you'll see Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern, CSX, BNSF, etc all at the top of the list. They've been treating their workers like garbage for the last decade and it's all hitting the fan now. Workers haven't seen a new contract or raises since before the covid shutdown (when the rail workers were all furloughed) and just a couple of weeks ago the major companies were on the record stating that "labor does not contribute to the companies profits". Good luck out there baws - I doubt the feds allow the strike to go longer than a day or two but hopefully it gets the message across to the companies.

Ed Elkins, executive vice president and chief marketing officer at Norfolk Southern, wrote in a Friday message to intermodal customers that railroads “have reached or are finalizing tentative agreements with 10 of the 12 unions involved in negotiations.” To date, five unions have announced tentative agreements [see “Two more unions reach tentative agreements …,” Trains News Wire, Sept. 3, 2022]. “We asked the two holdout unions for a commitment not to strike so we could continue normal operations,” Elkins wrote, “but they have declined.” That being the case, Elkins said, NS will begin embargoing certain types of shipments as of today, “which includes rail security-sensitive material and certain time-sensitive shipments outlined in the embargo.” Other customers, including bulk unit trains, intermodal, and automotive, will see a curtailment of service up to 72 hours before the end of the cooling-off period “to prepare for a safe and orderly stoppage should there be a strike.”

Interesting take. I know three guys who work for the railroad out of Addis and Livonia and even they admit it’s a pretty sweet gig.
They definitely work for their money, but none of them claim to be mistreated or undervalued.

Unions are basically domestic terror organizations now. They haven’t been actually helpful to anything or anyone in 60 years or more.

It’s just odd to me that the railroads in Europe were planning on striking at the same time. I read earlier they called it off because of the queen’s death. Was this planned to be an international strike to get more publicity?

Same here, the couple of people I know who work for railroads love it and say they are probably overpaid for what they do.

Bs. My dad‘s neighbor was an engineer I’ve got two uncles that were engineers and all of them made damn good money whether they were working on the train or sitting at home they literally threw the union have insurance for their wages I don’t have to fricking work and make the same money.

likely very new and minimally qualified for what they do, I'll never understand that sentiment from an educated, trained, qualified, and experienced professional, plus, I hear a lot of people make statements like that, usually in a social setting meant to imply that they're "raking it in" as a subtle brag when they're in fact not really doing that great

I work for CSX, it's a terrible place right now. When Hunter Harrison came in and took over... is when it all went to hell. Foote and Boychuk are just running Harrison's play book. They are still cutting jobs, making trains ridiculously too long.
I hope we do strike on the 15, but if we do, congress will order us back to work with in hours of the strike
