New York State AG Letitia James caught leaking tax returns of Nikki Haley's nonprofit

Politico recently published information about donors who had made anonymous contributions to Haley’s advocacy group, Stand for America Inc. The 2019 IRS filing had been obtained by a watchdog group called Documented, and shared with Politico.
Haley said the filing published by Politico showed that it came from someone in the New York State Attorney General's Office.
"We're going to fight this. And we are filing a lawsuit against the New York State Attorney General's Office. We are going to Merrick Garland and saying this is a federal tax crime, and we want him to investigate that office," she told Dana Perino, expressing doubt that Garland will take action.

That would be because they are. A nonprofit of sufficient size must file a form 990 with the IRS. Those are the returns so to speak. You don’t actually have federal income tax returns because you don’t pay federal income taxes as a 501(c)(3).
I am making the assumption this is a federal tax return because she calls this a federal issue. It could be the leaking of a state tax return. Some states don’t require nonprofits to file tax returns, but I’m guessing some may. I’m not sure how that would be a federal issue, but it may be.
As far as the form 990 goes, that is 100% public record and available through the IRS’s website.

I’ve read more now. It was the publishing of dark money donors that was the issue. That doesn’t have to be released publicly. That would explain her anger.

A purposeful disclosure of such private info wouldn’t make you angry?

This is where you’re wrong. I think this is BS. She has every right to be pissed and should sue. I am against dark money in politics from both sides. If you want to buy influence, then we voters deserve to know who our candidates are taking big money from.
With that being said, that’s not the law. Her donors and she both had an expectation of privacy that was violated here. They should sue and nail the leakers for it.
