For the folks here who go to school here or parents who send their kids here, what is your opinion of the quality of life at LSU? I graduated in '94 and my kid is considering it next year. There have always been incidents but lately it seems like there's something daily from kidnappings, to off campus shootings, to fights in the dorms. I did some crazy shite, but this just seems to be on another level. Are other college campuses experiencing this stuff?

Compare the size of LSU to the number of crimes.
LSU Student population is around 35,000.

Trust Murphy Paul to be a professional LEO & administrator.

And the City/Parish to support Law Enforcement.

Your child should be fine.

When I was at LSU, almost all females carried taser guns because Derrick Todd Lee was killing young females in the area.

The campus is way better than back then.

I agree. There was never a fight when I went to LSU. Never had a shooting north of campus either.

36K. They've actually been growing significantly in enrollment since 2018, even through the pandemic.

Kind of impressive actually. It was about 28K when I was on campus and it felt crowded sometimes.

my, my how times have changed. They used to warn us about walking home drunk from Murpheys and going down Carlotta Street. That was the biggest threat we faced. That and Bud Richey or Kathy Marcel fricking up our parties.

Make sure you tour where they are going to live before you let them go. There are many apartment complexes that look nice online, but in person are not 1. safe 2. worth the money.

I would consider some of the newer places down past the Lee X Burbank intersection.

I left B.R. in '91 and couldn't imagine living there now. My son chose to go to LA Tech over LSU. Ruston may not be much but he didn't like B.R. at all.

Do not send your kids to LSU. The quality of education is poor on top of all of the safety issues.

They get to live in fancy new on-campus apartments with high end finishes, flat screen TV's, a door you have to scan into, and not a single cockroach. And they can walk to restaurants and grocery stores on campus safely without worrying if Derek Todd Lee is going to get them. And they have a lazy river and a badass rec center.

They are way better off than when I was there.

When I was at LSU they advised folks to walk in groups at night, to avoid poorly lit areas and some of the "shortcuts" that were isolated between buildings and such. Especially female students. There were several rapes that had occurred as well as some armed robberies but LSU would try to keep the lid on that info going public. That was in 1980.

I have one kid who graduated last December and another who is a senior now. I always advised them not to go north of campus alone. Anything that happens now gets broadcast, which is good but makes it look like things there are awful. Though I have seen a noticeable increase in incidents the last couple of years.

1980 it was probably pretty tame.

1990s was record high crime for Baton Rouge and Louisiana.

Things calmed down again briefly, then a few serial killers happened. Then things really picked back up again after Katrina.
