Yeah as I mentioned, you guys know the situation with John Emery. I really can’t get into the specifics of that because of the Buckley Amendment, but he’s certainly a guy that’s going to be part of what we do this year,” Kelly said. “Then Noah Cain as I mentioned, was really impressed with him today. Armoni [Goodwin] is a guy that we’re going to count on. [Josh] Williams has been probably as consistent as any back that we’ve had. And Nick Demas has done a really nice job.”

“Leonard Fournette is not in that backfield, so we don’t have like that marquee guy if you will,” said Kelly. “But all of them complement each other very well and I think we’ll be very effective at that position and I think each one of them can contribute in a manner that will allow us to be successful at the position.”

We have as much talent in the backfield as any team in the country

I’m just looking forward to seeing a RB rotation that actually makes sense

Nobody but LSU fans knew who Clyde was before 2019 season. Just saying.

I wouldn’t call that “excitement”

No he didn’t.

I listened to it—it sounded a lot differently than it reads. He was fairly satisfied with where we are now after Cain finally had a more physical practice. Kelly stressed “he just hasn’t played a whole lot of football,” (due to his injury) and indicated he’s been a little timid, not trusting his body fully, but is getting better and had his best practice Saturday.

He kind of avoided Goodwin, saying something like “he’s gonna play a lot of football for us.” We’ve seen reports of Goodwin making a lot of plays lately, but I think Kelly’s remarks on him after the scrimmage were due to him being a little banged up—he didn’t practice when the media was there and may have not scrimmaged.

He mentioned Emery and his grade issue (without mentioning it), but didn’t talk about him as a RB specifically.

He mentioned Josh Williams as being maybe the most consistent back. I think he’s better than most give him credit for on here—those that even acknowledge his existence—but he is what he is,

He even mentioned a walk-on whose name I don’t know as performing well.

He talked about how they were going to be a committee, and that they all had different skill sets that complimented each other. He didn’t express anything near “excitement,” however. If anything, it was more “relief” that Cain was finally starting to step up and be more physical. And just because we’re gonna use a committee doesn’t mean we have “depth.” We don’t. At all.

This would not be a RB group at Notre Dame to be excited about, much less at LSU with not only our tradition, but with having to make it through an 8-game SEC schedule. Our RB depth is a weakness of this team that, unless we’re EXTREMELY lucky, is likely to rear its ugly head toward the end of the season. I appreciate all your posts, Captain, but if you’re gonna misrepresent what Kelly said like this, I’m not sure we can trust your threads anymore.

John Emery was the #1 RB coming out. At one point, Cain was a 5-star before a late bump down. Then Goodwin was a good 4-star that seemed underrated.

We don't have the best in the country, but we have extremely good running backs

It’s refreshing to hear “coach speak “ spoken so well. After listens to the incoherent ramblings of Les and the Shrimp Boat Captain this is a welcome change.

Unproven OL
No standout RB
Possible dilemma at QB
New playbook for everyone

About as exciting as passing a kidney stone.

I'm excited to see this new era of Bayou Bengal glory begin!

I didn't hear excitement. However, he just might be suppressing some because:

A) IF we can get Emery on the field I full expect him to be a marquee guy. Maybe not the best all around back ever, but I'm thinking Chubb level for sure.

B) It is possible that Cain gets back to form and is well above average, and durable. "well above average" meaning very good, just short of national star, living up to his hype coming out of college. Never underestimate a "money year" combined with a fresh start and injury free.

C) As many said here already, Goodwin is going to shock some people. He's got speed, balance, can catch, and some wiggle. Durability and size are a concern; but size takes a back seat for "slipperyness" and strenght with RBs (see Warrick Dunn).

D) Put any of those 3 with Daniels, who has wheels, and a competent Read-Option playbook and it COULD be lethal.

IF all of those come to fruition there are reasons for the staff to be very excited. I think, personally, if CBK is excited it is based on the HOPE that those will come to fruition. But he above anybody else whether that hope is hopeless, or we're really close and it is warranted.

And this is behind an OL that will steadily improve because it is very talented but inexperienced (at this level) and are in a new offense (again). So they will steadily get better every week to compliment all of that.

Will only take a couple weeks to find out.

A lot will depend on the OL opening holes

And

Can the qb create opportunities for the running game with effective passing
