actually more an 1/3 of the freed blacks in the South owned slaves themselves. In addition most Native American tribes still in the area owned slaves. What the trail of tears fails to ever point is that black slaves carried many of their valuables on that long journey

Is the assumption that general universal type "Veterans Monuments" in the state do not already pay tribute to such individuals?

Yes. They don't see themselves represented by some granite creature. Are these going to be colored statues?

We've experienced it here.

There wasn't a hint of understanding or consideration of the historical monuments even as valuable "collectors' items."

It was clear, blatant "catch back" and revenge.

We tried to tell everyone that this was just a pilot, a probe, at just how much the citizens would accept.

That it would lead to the targeting of every white-connected monument.

Even our statue of St. Joan in the Quarter is on the list for dismantling, along with the WWI Doughboys remembrance in City Park, and the statue of Simon Bolivar on Canal Street.

It didn't take long for other American figures not a part of the Confederacy to be targeted.

But don't think we're anywhere near the conclusion of this push.

Right now the Danish-American Gutson Borglum is the next big target.

He apparently cozied up to the Klan.

The one who began the Stone Mountain monument and then sculpted Mt. Rushmore.

So those two works of art are definitely seen as having a finite shelf-life.

Kind of an odd statement to make considering that the two most popular anecdotes of participation of black soldiers in the Civil War were the battles of Fort Wagner (54th Massachusetts Regiment), and Fort Pillow in which in both cases the were slaughtered.

Apparently it's not just Union soldiers. It's just a monument to black soldiers from Louisiana.

quote:

Situated in the State Capitol’s Louisiana Veterans Memorial Park, the African American Veterans Monument will honor freed and formerly enslaved Louisiana soldiers who fought for the Union during the Civil War as well as soldiers from World War I and II, the Vietnam War, the Iraq War and more recent conflicts.

Louisiana is home to more than 80,000 Black veterans, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. About a third of 1.3 million enlisted soldiers, sailors and airmen are Black.

The OP saw something honoring black military veterans and it gave him the vapors.

That’s as it should be. Just like the statues of Hitler and Hussein came down, so should the statues of confederates who fought for the ugly institution of slavery. It’s a simple concept.

They fought against invasion, there was a Congressional resolution saying the war was waged by the north to preserve the union. Further, the corwin amendment was passed by Congress to protect slavery in the South to entice the South back in or at least the border states to remain in the union, they still declined. Lincoln said on multiple occasions that his desire was to preserve the union, what he did for the blacks was a means to that end. The border states didn’t secede until the invasion was called for. And there are many more inconvenient details like this. Yea the South had slavery, but let’s be fair.

What bothers me most about stories like these: Many black Americans would be against the idea of placing statues of one ethnic group ahead of another. But idiotic woke movements have hijacked the voices of sane Americans. It’s unfortunate that the idiots are speaking for all.

I wonder what the white/black ratio of war times deaths is.

I believe now, even with higher #s of blacks enlisted, the ratio is still skewed. People who throw around "enlisted" as something special act like there is no difference between combat soldiers and the everyday support person. Ie...I got no special respect for cooks, office admins, or logistics, etc folks.
