Why does China have such a big issue with Taiwan?
Posted on 8/2/22 at 7:46 am to SlidellCajun
They view Taiwan as a breakaway province since the late 40’s, when the PRC won the Chinese Civil War on the mainland and the ROC government escaped with a couple million followers and soldiers to Taiwan.
Beijing feels very strongly to say the least that they are the government of all of China, and that Taiwan is a part of China.

Remember when GB tried to make claim for America. Then the founding Patriots said “Make my day”.
Same thing

Taiwan used to be part of China.
1920's - Chinese Civil War begins between the Kuomintang (Nationalists) and Communists. Kuomintang was led by a guy named Chiang Kai-shek. The Communists were led by Mao Zedong.
1930's - Japan invades China. The Kuomintang and Communists agree to stop fighting each other for awhile and team up against Japan.
1940's - Japan is defeated. The Kuomintang and Communists resume their civil war.
1947-48 - The Communists under Mao Zedong are victorious. The Kuomintang and Chiang Kai-shek have retreated to Taiwan. Mainland China becomes the People's Republic of China, and Taiwan becomes the Republic of China.
1950's-Present - The People's Republic of China view Taiwan as part of them, but as a province in rebellion. The government in Taiwan views themselves as sort of a "government-in-exile" for all of China.
The United States has a defense agreement with Taiwan.
This is why knowing history is important. It explains the who/what/when/where/why we are where we are today.

Why does the US have such a big issue with Taiwan? It’s not like we have domestic issues we need to address.

Remove all the frills, and it is really that simple.

Well, they do make a lot of computer chips and technology parts for the nice electronically controlled things we love so much...

They make most of our computer chips.

This is the issue with a national divorce. It might work for a little while, but in 50-60-80 years, the stronger side will claim that the other side belongs to them.
China-Taiwan is literally a national divorce. They kept running until Mao didnt chase them anymore.

Nope, not here I can assure you...
The left would be begging to be let in, kind of a reverse of the China / Taiwan situation...

Remember when GB tried to make claim for America. Then the founding Patriots said “Make my day”. Same thing
Imagine that all the American Tories fled to Maine in the early 1780s, established a government under the Articles and claimed to still be the legitimate government of the entire United States, while the government in the remaining states moved forward with a new Constitution and continued to claim Maine as part of Massachusetts. Then imagine that for decades most of the world continued to recognize the Tories, and NOT to recognize Washington, etcetera. That was the status of affairs before we recognized Beijing (Peking at the time) in 1979.
Do you think that might annoy the folks governing the bulk of the country under our shiny new Constitution?
Now imagine the world SLOWLY coming to recognize Washington as the government of the United States, while a handful of holdouts continue to recognize the Tories in Maine as governing the entire continent. That is the status of China/Taiwan today.

Seriously, saying google should be banned. That has to be the best marketing of all time. Anytime someone talks about doing searches, they say Google it. It’s the worst search engine out there, especially for people who talk here

You're entire existence depends on TSM chips. No chips? No food, energy, clean water, transportation etc...
