The Tiger II was the successor to the Tiger I, combining the latter's thick armour with the armour sloping used on the Panther medium tank. The tank weighed almost 70 tonnes, and was protected by 100 to 185 mm (3.9 to 7.3 in) of armour to the front.[11] It was armed with the long barrelled 8.8 cm KwK 43 L/71 anti-tank cannon.[notes 2] The chassis was also the basis for the Jagdtiger turretless Jagdpanzer anti-tank vehicle.[12]
The Tiger II was issued to heavy tank battalions of the Army and the Waffen-SS. It was first used in combat by 503rd Heavy Panzer Battalion during the Allied invasion of Normandy on 11 July 1944;[13] on the Eastern Front, the first unit to be outfitted with the Tiger II was the 501st Heavy Panzer Battalion, which by 1 September 1944 listed 25 Tiger IIs operational

I remember the first time I saw Saving Private Ryan in a theater with the huge sound system....and that scene where the Tiger tank (believe it was a King Tiger) was rumbling down the street. I about shite myself.

I remember that scene. That was a a old Soviet T-34 modified for the movie to be a Tiger I. They did a good job overall in making a T-34 into a Tiger I. But if you look closely at the front of the hull, the road wheels, and the tracks, you can tell it’s a T-34 modified into appearing to to be a Tiger I.

I love the sound of WWII era tanks and aircraft.

That sounds is awesome. Sounds like something that is about to tackle a quick 1/4 mile.

Probably my favorite tank and that long barrel 88 was a beast although probably a bit overkill. Don’t think it’s front armor was ever penetrated in combat.

Awesome! How do you display your work? Glass cabinet or something?

1. I’m proud to be a nerd.
2. They can move. But these rubber tracks are super tight so I would not advise trying.
