The timetable for Mike Trout’s return is not getting any clearer with each passing day.

Angels head athletic trainer Mike Frostad said Wednesday that Trout is improving, but he still has at least a week to go before feeling the full benefits of the cortisone injection he received last week. In the meantime, he will continue to work on core stability and do cardio workouts, without any baseball activity

Trout’s injury was first diagnosed as back spasms when he left a game July 12. A week later, when the Angels placed him on the injured list, they announced it was rib cage inflammation. Frostad explained that the muscle spasms around the inflammation to protect it. Frostad said it’s technically a “costovertebral dysfunction at T5.”
quote:

“This is a pretty rare condition that he has right now in his back,” Frostad said. “(Dr. Robert Watkins), one of the most well-known spine surgeons in the country, if not the world, doesn’t see a lot of these. For it to happen in a baseball player, we just have to take into consideration what he puts himself through with hitting, swinging on a daily basis just to get prepared and then also playing in the outfield, diving for balls. Jumping into the wall, things like that. And there’s so many things that can aggravate it, but this doctor hasn’t seen a lot of it. And he’s one of the best in the country.”
quote:

Asked if Trout could miss the rest of the season, Frostad said: “We hope not. I don’t think we’re at a point where we’re going to make that decision. He’s going to have a follow-up here once we get back, and we’ll just kind of see what the doctor thinks at that point. But that really hasn’t been a discussion that we’ve had.”

Frostad added that the Angels will need to keep an eye on this indefinitely.

“Long-term, we do have to look at this as something that he has to manage not just through the rest of this season, but also through the rest of his career, probably,” Frostad said.

Despite all of that, Frostad said Trout is improving.

“He’s a little bit more upbeat today,” Frostad said. “He’s starting to feel like he’s getting the benefits.”

Trout has been traveling with the team, but he has not spoken to the media since last week at the All-Star Game. He spent much of Tuesday in the indoor batting cage, watching his teammates hit.

Glad I was able to watch him in his prime but damn this sucks for one of the best in the game

Didn’t even know he was still in the league, with as little as he actually plays… he’s either really unlucky with injuries or a massive pussy that can’t play with/through pain that other players would/could… my money is on the latter

It's July, and it's hot. Mike Trout is on his annual vacation.

He missed a lot of time last year and the Angels only played 60 games in 2020, but from 2012-2019, the least amount of games he played in was 119

I was doing some reading on it a bit ago and I don't think it's as serious as "rare back condition" implies. Remember he initially missed some time with back spasms, then they said he had a rib injury then amended it to a back issue. That's all related and makes some sense now. The costovertebral dysfunction is an alignment issue where the rib attaches to the spine and it can be caused by back spasms.

In non-400 million dollar athletes, a chiropractor can treat it. Not sure what they'll do with Trout. It does sound like it can be a recurring issue that he'll have to deal with. Just a risk it happens again but not something he's constantly battling.

So Trout has essentially become a guy who plays maybe 100 games a year due to rest and injury and it can be injured by doing anything strenuous?

In other words, he has played over 140 games just 4 times in his career and the last time was 2016

Sounds like the roids have caught up to him. Really is a shame. One of the best talents of all time.

That's probably why he signed that massive deal not that long ago. He probably remembered when Griffey kept getting hurt around the same age. If he waited for UFA, there's no assurances what might or might not happen.

His career isn't over, but injuries like that are often reoccurring.

Yep, I can’t believe Juan Soto passed on a $400 million deal. I don’t care if it’s a bad franchise.

He signed it in 2019, long before this was an issue, March of 2019 coming off his age 26 season where he played 140 games and posted an8 WAR

No, he'll show up every spring training and play through April to make sure he gets every penny of that $37m through 2030, which is why I have no sympathy for him being on a garbage team like the Angels. He signed that deal, play it out. Nobody is going to trade for that contract and injury history now.

Ohtani needs to look at Trouts career and GTFO of there.

There is zero reason to play him this season. Keep him rested for next year

The Angels are old hats when it comes to overpaying players who will be long past their prime before the contract is up. Albert Pujols approves this message.
