Heat putting me in a moving spirit

Getting to the point where I dread the heat. I like to be outside but not drenched in sweat. Yes, it’s pathetic…. yes, our ancestors dealt with much worse…. no longer care.
Any folks that moved out west? How’d it work out? Arizona, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Montana? Been looking at out of the way places that still have all you need, Pocatello ID, Cheyenne, WY, Cedar City UT, Flagstaff AZ, Billings MT.
Talk me down…. as I would have to say goodbye to regular big football games in person.

Move to the south side of Chicago. It’s temperate and has a great reputation of safety. You can get to some major college football stadiums within a few hours. Win-win.

Not exactly what I had in mind. If I’m moving north it’s to Maine.

I’m going to be a snow bird at some point but I’m at least 15 years away. Arizona has some really nice places an hour or two from Phoenix.

I should probably leave because I also have the unpopular opinion that Urban Meyer’s Utah team was BCS worthy, perhaps even the best team in the land.
So, apparently, I’m safe somewhere in Utah.

Some of the places I’m looking at have a small college and most are FCS…. Can’t give up live football no matter how slow or pathetic it is.

How much do you like the cold? You can’t have one without the other.

I like the idea of living in a smallish town with a university.
So, yes, really liking Flagstaff. Been looking at places with universities that play in the mountain west conference. Most of the cities were larger. Then, looked at cities in the big sky conference. It’s a tiny conference that plays 1aa football.

Starting to think I could deal with the cold more than the heat. I spent a small bit of time in cold country…. there was something satisfying about being warm when it was cold outside.

quote:Easy, go up there in the thick of winter - January/February. Get a rental, and not a hotel-motel that has restaurants nearby. Get something where you'll have to fill the fridge and run errands before/during/after storms so you'll get the full experience of winter and not the touristy version. Especially Cheyenne when it's 10º with the wind blowing 60-70 mph and Interstate 80 and 25 is shut down for 3 or 4 days.
Talk me down

Seems to be a retirement trend among folks I know.

I second what the other person said. Get a rental for a year and live local. Then you will know if you want to make it permanent without jumping all in at first.

I hunted Montana last year. It’s an awesome place, but aside from the great outdoors, there isn’t much going on.
Which you may love or hate.

If the heat is breaking you then the long cold winters of anywhere without heat will kick your arse.
There’s a reason snow birds fly south in the winter.

Visiting the real cold is very, very different than living there.
I have some friends that grew up in wy/Mt and they will never go back. Shoveling snow, bitter cold, you go to school in blizzards, etc.
I have some that absolutely love cross country skiing and are cold weather lifers.
Find out which version you are before you pull the trigger on the northern states. Local montana folks are making a killing on Californians moving in, hating that first winter, and leaving.
Sell high, buy back low, rinse repeat.

Visiting, low tolerance.
Living, higher tolerance.
Most folks don't shovel snow anymore. I hear people say its "colder where I'm from than here" but they just get acclimated.
