Pantera Tour 2023

According to this article, Pantera is apparently going to reunite and go on tour in 2023. I just don’t see how this happens without Dime and Vinnie. Pantera was so tight as a band, and being without the brothers who founded the band, and were such integral, foundational members, I just don’t get why they are trying to do this with only half of the classic lineup. Money grab I suppose.

If Vinnie were still alive, I would have understood it a lot more, however, no one can replace Dime.

What are your thoughts on this? Would you go see a Pantera show with just Phil and Rex? This article does not mention who would be stepping into Dime and Vinnie’s roles, but according to Rex, Zakk Wylde will not be a potential candidate.

ETA: It has been confirmed that Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante will be joining Phil and Rex for the reunion tour.

Saw this earlier. No Dimebag no Pantera. Period.

Truth. See, when Vinnie was still alive, I was all for them reuniting with Zakk Wylde filling in for Dime on guitar. They were close friends, and we all know Zakk has the chops. But thinking back on it, there was only one Dimebag Darrell Abbott. He was as unique a guitar player as there ever was. His sound was unlike any other. You can’t replace a force like him, the band would sound totally different and would not be Pantera.

Phil and Rex are important too, but without the Abbotts, it’s just not Pantera. They’re riding on the name, and I feel like that is not fair to the fans.

Dime IS what made Pantera great. Without him this is just a cover band trying to do a money grab. Hard pass.

No they're not. Don't care what they call themselves. Its Phil and Rex...without the Abbotts, there is no Pantera.

I love Phil, but he should know better.

As a Pantera die hard I have mixed feelings about this. It is rumored that Zack Wilde will play guitar & Charlie Benante will play drums. It is going to be interesting to see what type of venues they will book. Will it be arenas or theater style venues? They can't call it Pantera with no Dime or Vinnie. I predict they will call it Vulgar Display of Pantera which is what Phil called his set when opened on Slayers last tour.

If it's that lineup, I'll definitely go see them.

I saw Phil with Down in New Orleans last year and it was a great show. I've also seen some videos of Phil doing Pantera songs with The Illegals and that left a lot to be desired.

Who actually fills in on drums and guitar is the question.

I'm sure it would be a good show considering the musicians involved. Call it anything you like but don't call it Pantera.

Anytime I see crusty old metal dudes in Mandeville, I just assume one of them is Phil.

There are only about 100 other bands doing the same thing. This isn’t anything new.

This is true. Take for example one of my favorite bands growing up, Lynyrd Skynyrd. They literally have ONE original member left in the band, guitarist Gary Rossington. The other guitarist, Rickey Medlocke, is debatable as an original member (he was in Skynyrd for a little while as a drummer in their early days, but he didn’t play on any of their albums in the 70’s).

Point being, when you get down to only one member left from the classic lineup, they should not still be calling themselves Lynyrd Skynyrd. Period.

So yeah, a lot of bands are doing this, but at least there are a few that are still all or mostly original members. Take the big tour right now, Motley/Poison/Leppard. Motley Crüe still have all original members, as does Poison. Def Leppard is about half original members if I remember correctly.

ZZ Top had an incredible run. They had the same three guys in the band for over 50 years. That is quite a feat.

I was mainly referring to the number of 70’s-90’s bands doing the casino circuits.

I’ll happily go see them and it doesn’t bother me if half the band is calling themselves Pantera. Only half of KISS is original, but it would be ridiculous to say they can’t call themselves KISS. Did Dime have a unique sound? Sure. Is it impossible to replicate? Hell no - teenage kids all over the country can mimic him. Can anyone replace him for new, original Pantera songs? Hell no. But they can play what he has already created and sound just like him. And who has ever cared who the drummer is in a band (no offense, drummers)?

Rock on, Pantera...in any way, shape or form. As long as Phil is at the helm.

Some just don't know when to let go. I guess there's a market for it. I wouldn't care to see them, its not Pantera.

Would love to see them live again at any time, but no Dimebag or Vinny, makes things not as good.
