Looking back, how did he get a Gold Glove award, much less 5 of them?
Because that was when the gold glove was like an all-nba defensive team selection pre-sabermetrics. Very similar to Kobe Bryant. Great offensive player, amazing leader, lots of rings, and complete bullshite defensive recognition based on reputation alone.
I still appreciate the way Jeter played, same with Kobe. Loved to hate them both.

He's got 5 GGs because he was an effective SS that made plays that are highlight reels. Sure, they're better SSs that were better with a glove, but Jeter made plays when it counted. That's why he's won 5 rings because he's El Capitain and players love him. Also, people love to hate winners and players that are on top, it's just a natural thing.

don’t think he needed to cut that ball off in the Oakland game.
Completely agree but the media sucks him off for it. He made the play closer than it should have been.

Its funny, he even admitted to a reporter in an article during his and Nomar's prime that Yankees fans would shout at him, Jeter you suck! Nomar is better!

Ozzie Smith is the least deserving player ever inducted into the hall of fame.
This is just dumb. Ozzie Smith probably saved more runs with his glove than most in the HOF produced with their bats.

Stats don't lie. Sammy kalifah was better defensively than Jeter.

He is proof that being very very good and very very overrated are not mutually exclusive.

Derek Jeter was not a good shortstop.
Clutch offensive player. Crap defensive player. Yankees bias. He was a celebrity.
Personally, I like shortstops that can field first but ain't nobody ever asked me.

Put him on the Brewers or Royals and he never sniffs the HOF.

There have been much better at the position. He had a really good BA, which is why he’s in the HOF. I think he was a bit overrated myself, probably because he played for NYY.

All of y’all who say he should not be in are fricking dumb..
How do you even have a fricking discussion of keeping the guy with the 6 most hits all time, .310 career batting average and 5th in home runs hit by his position out of the Hall.
He’s also got a better fielding percentage than Barry Larkin.

.310 with a .377 career OBP is pretty insanely good. Nobody is arguing whether he was HOF worthy.

He played with basically an all star team his whole career. Put him on the teams I stated and he would not have been that good.

You're not only right, but he's highly overrated. If he played in KC, he's still in the Hall, but not this first ballot lock with 99% of the vote.

It was an act of selfishness that Jeets didn't give up the SS position to ARod when he joined the Yankees.

At shortstop, Jeter is easily one of the game’s worst defenders of his time
quote:
Since defensive runs saved (DRS) — indicates how many runs a player saved or hurt his team in the field compared to the average player at his position — became a statistic in 2003 until his retirement in 2014, Derek Jeter posted the worst rating among qualified shortstops with a staggering -152 DRS.
quote:
Per, FanGraphs, here’s an overall list of fielders who cost their teams the most runs on defense from 2003-2014:
Derek Jeter (-152)
Prince Fielder (-95)
Hanley Ramirez (-73)
Yuniesky Betancourt (-66)
Dan Uggla (-66)
quote:
Throughout his “Gold Glove” years, his DRS stood at -92, 204 runs worse than Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson, who registered the most DRS (112) from 2004 to 2010.
quote:
Since 2003 (again, when these advanced metrics were brought into the picture), Jeter’s rating of -76.1 ranks dead last among qualified shortstops and is second-worst to only right fielder Jermaine Dye (-103.4) when compared to every position.

Jeter…terrible short stop. That is not a debate.
Jeter did not hit a lot of home runs, extra base hits, RBI’s, or steal a lot of bases. His best hitting stat is his overall batting average which was a career .310 which is really good but not great.
Ichiro Suzuk’s career average was .311 with more HR’s, extra base hits, steals, and RBI’s. Jeter is not half the defensive player Ichiro was.
Jeter had NY hype on his side and was overrated.
