It’s not a far drop from the sidewalk to the gutter

A friend & I have brought our families to a beautiful East TN mountain lake for a few days. I brought my fishing boat, he brought his pontoon & accessories, and we rented a large VRBO home in a small lake village.
There is a modest home next door to our rental for sale with an asking price of nearly $1M.
There is a community boat ramp just down the hill from the homes. This ramp has a baw living in a mini van. He arrives around 6:30 each evening and heads out at 5:50 each morning. While at the ramp, he sits in the back of his van watching movies on the tiny TV.
It saddens me that this guy is literally living in a van down by the river within walking distance of million dollar homes.
There, but for the grace of God, go I.

My eyes are burning at the amount of subtle brags

Yeah that first paragraph really lays it on.

Don't let that passing thought spoil your expensive vacation.

He may prefer the van to the 1 million dollar home. I probably would.

Did you write all of this just for a Chris Farley quote?

Plot twist. The guy in the van is staying there while he rents out his mansion.

he makes more money then you do and doesnt pay taxes on it. he panhandles all day for a living just waiting for suckers like you to feel sorry for him and give him money.

It's no brag to say you have to rent a house for the weekend to go to a lake, any OT baller will have multiple lakefront homes.

The real irony is that guy is probably living a happier life than you.

Why, because he gets to be there every day for free, but you have to pay to do it?

It's good that the situation made you contemplate pride and blessings. But don't feel bad for the guy.
Ever consider the notion that the guy was just tired of the Rat-race/keeping up with the Joneses? (I think that stigma no longer applies anyway).
Probably has more peace of mind than Joe Millionaire next door. Good for that baw. He sounds relaxed.

Not sure how much panhandling takes place in this little town.

Yet, up in the mountains, you've never gone to sleep to the gentle slap of water on rocks. You've never seen the water and its animals awaken. There's so much you'll never see or experience. It doesn't bother you to stay in a building that is no more authentic than the franchise hamburger joint down the hill (unless it's Pal's, a whole different experience, even for chili buns).
You don't even know the magnificence of a spring in the mountains with redbud blooms falling into the water, followed a week or so later by dogwood blooms.
