Recent flights and turbulence warnings/reactions from crew

So after a 2 year layoff on flying, I've recently taken 3 trips in 5 weeks. 2 for work, one personal, all 3 on different airlines(American, Delta, SW)

On half of my segments, we had flight attendants come on and point out that we would be expecting some moderate to severe turbulence, and they were either suspending service or ending early or having us put up tray tables 45 minutes ahead of landing, etc. And in each one of those instances, we never had more than a couple of bumps. Nothing even close to what I would consider severe. Today, the captain came on and apologized for the rough ride, all the while both of the other people in my row kept sleeping and my drink never even sloshed around.

Has this changed over the last couple of years industry wide? I remember taking some flights over my time that resembled roller coasters, and we barely got a mention if anything.

I always found it comforting when the attendants were still walking around during turbulence. Thought process being, if they still up and about then all is good.

Now they always are seated and I get anxious. Never really thought why. We traveled during the pandemic so I didn’t notice an abrupt change as you did.

Full disclosure, I’m a huge puss when it comes to turbulence. I hate flying. But love to travel. It’s something I deal with. Flew in from Chicago today and after the first “bump “ I white knuckled the seat…it’s getting worse for me as I travel more.

I've noticed what you're talking about within the past year. Sure if there's a line of thunderstorms we can wait for an hr as we maneuver through the weather. But a lot of times it's light turbulence that previous flights would be chugging through. Maybe they realize that on a long flight you're going to get served anyway within 3 hrs so what does it matter if it's right away?

Looking at the flight path today, I did notice we wound up swinging down and over the Gulf on our way into to New Orleans. I'm pretty sure that's not the route we took up to DC, so perhaps they gave the warning, decided it was going to be too rough anyway, and swung way around, thus we had no issues in the back.

I’ve had this happen twice recently, both on Southwest. In each case, both early morning flights, shortly after takeoff the captain announced he was asking the cabin crew to remain seated for the entire flight due to expected turbulence.

On both, there were minimal if any bumps. We reached a smooth cruise altitude on both flights and barely had a nibble.

Perhaps the F/A’s were hungover and asked the captain for a break on that leg.

Lawyers. If airlines over-warn of potential turbulence they have a stronger defense against frivolous lawsuits when someone "gets hurt".

Keep in mind, these lawsuits can originate from airline employees as well (ie flight attendants not being ordered to strap in).

Have you seen the inflation rate? They are trying to cut down on that pretzel bill without saying so directly.

Yes and it’s called laziness.

I was in Delta Comfort recently and this happened. Was looking forward to a glass of wine and we ended up getting nothing.

It would have been fine except they were up and about serving first class in glasses like nothing was going on.

I've had this happen twice. Both times no drink service only water. Only one time we're there any bumps.

I can’t believe it took so long to get to the one true answer. Laziness. Pilots unions and flight attendants unions working together. As much as I love the efficiency of SWA, please don’t go patting yourselves on the back for epic customer service.

I fly SW multiple times a year between Las Vegas and LA and I noticed the last couple times they immediately announced no drink service due to flying conditions.

I wonder if there was an incident in which they spilled a cart all over someone and are now playing it safe.

I fly united and haven't noticed anything different about turbulence notices.

One thing- for first class they used to take cocktail orders as soon as you sat down. Now you have to wait until mid flight to get one, and you better order a double.
