drunk 22yo girl (OT 5.5, no pics except ring doorbell cam) ran into my son's parked car last night at 4:00am. Neighbor heard it, went out to investigate, brought the girl to our front door.
Girl's crying so hard she can barely speak. She gave us her phone and we called her parents, they arrived, we exchanged info, I got pics of everything including the tag & insurance verification (ins. was in the parents' name.) Over & over said they appreciated the way we handled it, promised up & down they'd take care of it via their insurance, the mom was on the phone with the insurance co. the entire time. They had the car towed and took her home.
Now that the sun's up it appears it's not only cosmetic damage to my son's car, the rear wheel is bent out of alignment and the frame may be affected. If it were my kid, I'd want whomever to handle it the same way we did. But how bad did I frick up by not immediately calling the police?

I doubt you screwed up. Accidents get dealt with on private property without the police all the time.

The depth of damage shouldn’t matter as long as they don’t try and make some crazy story up. And even if they do I think you have plenty to prevent that from happening.

A lot of places the police won’t even come out if there are no injuries.

Why would you need to call the police if they admitted guilt and contacted their insurance company.
Basically the same thing happened to a buddy of mine... He contacted their insurance company and they gave him a claim # and had his Tundra fixed.. No Police were involved.

Yes, multiple witnesses including the neighbors and the tow truck dude. We are just hoping their insurance co. doesn't have a problem with the fact a police report wasn't made.

Even ones with significant damage?

How well will you be able to live with yourself if you find out this chick was driving drunk again in the future and kills someone?

So you were being a nice guy to the young girl so she wouldn’t get a DUI. Nice job. Gonna cost you money

You kept the girl from going to jail and your sons car will still be paid for. Did a pretty good job.

because the next morning the perps usually reassess and completely change their views on the incident

You didn't frick up at all. This will all still be handled by their insurance and you gave her a chance to straighten up without a DWI. If she's a raging drunk, it'll catch up with her soon enough.

Just let your insurance handle it.

Driving drunk should have consequences. Should have called the cops and let her get the DUI. Frick drunk drivers
