I've been involved in several wrecks where the police weren't involved. Insurance co.'s will sort it out.

You’ll be fine. No need for a police report in that situation

chances are that's true, and I hope it is for the OP, but you always want everything in your favor when something like this happens, his insurance company and his attorney, if it gets to that point, will advise him to always get a police report

ALthough her parents seemed the type to bring down some major consequences themselves, we are regretting not calling the police. I just want my son's car paid for.

The only issue that would have needed to be handled by the police is the girl's drunkenness. Driving under the influence is against the law. Hopefully she learns from this and does not do it again. My fear would be that next time somebody could be seriously injured or killed.

Apparently the OP qualified for TL,DR by Andouille.

If the damage is as you described from the second look, it’s likely totaled.
Posted on 7/4/22 at 10:23 am to Naked Bootleg
If you got pictures of both cars, and all the insurance information, you’re probably fine no matter the severity of the damage. No pictures of the girl’s car and you’d likely be screwed.

Ok. But why here? The car she hit was parked. The insurer will pay it without too much effort. If they don’t have insurance, you are screwed anyway unless they have money.
So what’s the point of taking the police off the beat so you can have a piece of paper you don’t need?

I made mistakes as a young person. I'm sure you were perfect internet hero.

Just still file it under insurance but say that you didn't realize how bad it was until morning, which is why you didn't get police report.

that's where the police report would be yuuuge

possible/probable DUI with property damage

Yep, if that were my daughter, I would be very thankful that OP let me handle this without getting the police involved.

Police reports don't determine fault anyways.
Calling them wouldn't have done anything.

If you got a claim number from the other insurance company then you know it’s definitely been reported and you’re good.
Posted on 7/4/22 at 10:47 am to Naked Bootleg
The only possible frick up is attempting to conceal from the insurance companies her drunkenness and why she hit a parked vehicle at 4:00 am.
Posted on 7/4/22 at 10:59 am to Naked Bootleg
You didn’t frick up bad not calling the police given the entire circumstances of your story. Police report is evidence of fault. Sounds like that is not an issue.

You’re good.
Follow your moral compass and things will always work out.
Crash investigations for non fatal aren’t complex. The primary reason law enforcement responds is to document immediate scene as a third party neutral observer and ensure the exchange of information.
You have the information. Insurance adjuster will confirm the damage from young girl despite vehicles being removed.
The law doesn’t always follow the best morality for each situation. It’s a guide, but human instincts for good people will always prevail.
