How likely are stimulus checks to be used in this recession? Economists weigh in

In economic downturns, the U.S. government has a number of levers it can pull to keep families spending and shielded from the most dire situations. Continued spending is key, because if people’s buying slows or dries up, companies respond to lowering profits by laying off even more workers, which only deepens and prolongs the hard times.
Relief strategies include enhancing unemployment benefits, boosting food stamps, temporarily slashing taxes and sending out stimulus checks.

Sahm points out that stimulus checks have unique advantages compared with other forms of aid.
For one, they get to people quickly.
“The bottom falls out in a recession, so it’s important to blunt the fall,” Sahm said. “Checks do that well. The second and third rounds went out within days.”
“No other relief program came anywhere close.”
The payments also stimulate the economy in a short amount of time, she said. “Research on the stimulus checks shows that people spend about half of the checks, and they do so quickly.”
quote:
The fact that some believe “the high inflation we are experiencing was partially a consequence of sizable government transfers may mean there is less will for [the payments] in the immediate future,” Vavra said.

frick. No. Stop this insanity!
Handing out blanket "stimulus checks" to every Tom and hairy Dick aroud (all of them......even Trump's) is part of what got us here. Stop printing money and giving it to people who do not have a legitimate need! Stop it!

I don't think we can afford any of this. This recession is going to hurt - either we contribute to inflation by increasing deficit spending, or we just halt these practices and people start getting desperate.
ETA: Federal Reserve is going to start buying corporate bonds en masse again to keep companies liquid. That's going to hurt too, although they will eventually dump those.

It's going to be bad. We'll be screwed either way.

Fair. I think about that every time I see shitty highways or bridges here in the US.

If I get any stimulus checks, I'm promptly investing it Vanguard ETFs. The joke is on the people in Washington.

The tiny bit of relief checks provide doesn't justify damage they would inflict under these circumstances. Would only increase inflation.
Democrats don't care about us or the country, only about retaining power to force it's sick ideology on everyone.
They would push it only to appeal to voters.

frick them. I make too much to qualify for stimulus payments. But my taxes sure as frick don’t go down, everything from gas to groceries is ungodly expensive. And I actually spend money on things like vacations and stuff that actually stimulate local economies that, to be honest, I’m really going to have to scale back on doing.
But frick me right? How dare I bust arse, get a degree, work hard and get a good job.
I’m beyond caring about liberals and their plight. Because this is having a huge effect on my retirement and we’ll being.

Nothing's going to Ukraine, well they'll collect their laundering fees, but ultimately it's going back into the pockets of the Bidens, Pelosi's Schumer's, McConnells, Graham's etc. families pockets.
The American government and tax system is the biggest ponzi scheme ever in the history of ponzi schemes.
If you're not in upper level government (or a member of America's Royal Family as I see it) it doesn't matter what side of the fence your on you're getting screwed by those that are.

Think about it even more when you realize that we already give them money for that, yet very little seems to be getting done. They're robbing us blind.
