Anyone’s children ever played ODP? If so, how was it and also, was it worth it? TIA

My daughter is approaching the age of ECNL/GA and it's almost certainly not worth it and the system is so terrible for kids and their families. It's really a shame these jackass directors let their egos and kickbacks take precedence over what's best for the kids.

We are still about a year or so out but she definitely has what it takes. I just wasn’t sure if it will benefit her in the long run to give it a shot.

It’s all politics at that level.

It's a really tough spot honestly. People whose daughters have no chance to really make will pour so much time and money in for very little benefit. I don't really have any expectation of college but the high school my daughter will go to is one of the premiere 7A girls programs in Georgia so even to get on that team and actually play (which is really our main goal right now- she's 10) requires a significant investment.
She starts GA next year and we will be traveling out of state multiple times most months for a single game, or maybe two max. It all seems so silly and unnecessary given that there are easily 7-8 mid/high level clubs within a 20 mile radius of Metro Atlanta that they could play those teams and eliminate 80% of the travel without sacrificing quality of competition at all. Unfortunately youth soccer is splintered and everyone is in it for themselves instead of the people they should be striving to serve. For some reasons we, as parents, just bend over and take it.

Sad to see that the ODP program is still shut almost 30 years later.

I did ODP for a year when I was 15 and it was a great experience for me as a kid but looking back as a parent it was probably a pain in the arse. Driving to Lafayette for tryouts and I think BR for practices.
The regional tournament was a lot of fun and helped me realize I had no shot at making it pro so I could focus on getting drunk at LSU. Some of the kids playing for the other states were ballers
If you’re willing to put in time and money it can be a good experience for your kid, but unless your kid is incredible and gets noticed at bigger tournaments it’s not gonna be that big of help in their progression

Growing up if you weren't from Lafayette you had very little chance at making the squad. Like others have said it was all politics. Shame it seems the same decades later.

At this point it's a 3rd or 4th tier program in most states with competitive youth soccer.

Can’t believe ODP is still around. I thought MLS next was the new state program for the elite players.

In Texas MLS next and ecnl kids don't even play odp.

Son had a chance to do it several years back. Guessing he was about 12. Didn't make sense with all the travel. 2 hours for weekday practices.
In hindsight, accounting for his current interests as a normal 17 year old high school kid (girls, working out, jobs,) very glad we didn't pursue it.
Each to their own, though, admittedly.

You can copy and paste this into a travel baseball thread as well. It’s sad.

I know, she is Pre-GA this year and will be GA next year. She has a November birthday so she is the youngest on her team. Changing to the calendar year was unfortunate for us.

Just got back from the regional camp. TDP/MLS Next has gutted the program from the top talent. It’s a shell of what it used to be. It was a good experience but the talent is lacking. All the coaches were very good and knowledgeable.

ODP nowadays is not worth it like it used to be.

Thanks for the input. I’ve looked into ENCL but it looks like it’s a team format only. I was thinking more individually. She’s a very small 11yr old and her primary position is midfield with a little striker sprinkled in. She has zero issues other than size but I was just curious if there was anything out there to bump up her skill level/competition. I want her to be around others that are better so it’ll make her better. She has a very strong competitive nature to her. I’ve been playing for 25+ yrs but I feel she will need more than just ol’ dad putting her through the ringer. Haha
Thanks for all the feedback fellas!

I don't know where you live but ECNL is most likely going to give you the highest level of competition out there. If there is a GA program near you that is good as well but not quite as established as ECNL from what I've gathered.
Is she a 2010 or 2011?
