Is Jason Kelly legit?

What would you grade JK on this past season? I give him a C-…..wasn't exactly impressed. But Its hard to judge from 1 year plus LSU’s pitching staff was below par from the start. The thing that I question is the development of players. We had several talented freshman come in last year and 1 barely seen the field and other 2 underperformed(Lansville, Dutton,Taylor). Plus several sophomores that showed potential and had successful outings last year and they all 3 regressed and barely saw the field this year(Edwards, Helmers, Fowler). May not have everything to do with Kelly and he may be just fine so we will see.
Oh and before I hear all the bitching and moaning…..Im not calling for his head and I still have hope in this staff, just asking for opinions.

Personally I think yes. He managed the staff really well when weekend starters proved inconsistent and couldn’t give long outings. The pitching could have been handled better in Hattiesburg but hindsight is 20/20 and you can’t blame Kelly for guys missing strike zones and/or getting raked. I think he and Johnson did a good job with the staff overall

More good than bad considering

You gave a first year coach who took over a staff with no clear cut starters and needed multiple transfers to complete and turned that into a top 5 staff in the SEC a C-?

Can we grade the bat girls, tarp crew and chalk line installation crew, as well?

I’m curious to see Hellmers, Fowler & Money next season (assuming they are back)
Biggest regressions imo
ETA
Regressions could have nothing to do with Kelly, curious to see how he fixes it
Vietmeier spoke highly of him & it seems like the guys respond well to him

Holy shite I didn’t even read the rest of your post and now see that your biggest question is about development? After one year?!
Better to be thought a fool than to speak aloud and prove it.

Either him or Johnson took shite and made it into one of the best staffs from an ERA perspective in the conference by HOW THEY frickING MANAGED THEIR PITCHERS. They did that with a defense that was miserable and cost them 5 wins or so which made a huge difference in not having a regional at home.
C- MY arse.
A+ with how they were able to navigate this conference and win 17 games not having Marceaux or Coleman.
ERRORS KILL your team when you don’t have pitchers that can go any length. You cannot have a team of only bull pen guys. It doesn’t work that way.
AT BEST Hilliard is a 3rd starter but more reasonably a mid week guy or long relief.
If you want to grade ANYTHING low, give the defense a D-. In the end the defense played well. You need starting pitching that can put up zeros for multiple innings. LSU had none of that on the roster except Coleman who got hurt.
Damn man…

This does not mean what you think it means.

If the bat girls want to improve their grade they know what to do. B-/C+ awaiting their "extra credit" projects.
tarp crew - D (too lazy, they actually let rain hit the field before getting the infield covered. Need to step up their game.
Chalk line installation crew - need to be replaced. Get Southern Miss' crew - those lines never disappear.
Of course - all of this is facetiousness (with the exception of the bat girls).

I would give him a higher grade. He had no starting pitching. The bullpen had to throw way too many innings and ran out of gas. We still finished 5th in the league in ERA. Get that dude some starters and we are rolling.

It's a good question but a little early to tell. Johnson had to throw a staff together pretty quickly. He had to choose from who was available at that moment. Not to mention everything else on his plate in the beginning. It stands to reason that Kelly might not be a homerun hire.
I know one thing that was important to Johnson and that is recruiting and Kelly has a great personality. If he can show that he can develop, the recruits will come. Great players make great coaches. Time will tell.
If we replace him, I will take the S. Miss pitching coach.

If you can get him. LSU is not for everyone.

Thanks 1988. You have much more patience than me to try and make sense to these idiots

Yea dip shite some sort of development after 1 year. Like taking guys who already had successful outings in SEC play last year and improving them. Instead all 3 of them took steps backwards and become bench warmers. May not be because of Kelly but Im not sure….thats why Im asking the question lil man.
