Can we start having our lefties bunt?

Why not take the free base? We need runners on base tomorrow.

We don’t have many guys on this team who can execute a perfect bunt

Every single guy on a P5 baseball team should be able to execute a bunt. Period.

They can’t bunt, otherwise they would have done it by now. The bunt is going away in baseball.

I won’t accept that. It’s a fundamental baseball skill.

Not sure if you have noticed but this is Johnson’s philosophy. Get hit by pitch and take pitches to draw a walk. Which in return has worked out pretty well. The problem is we are way too inconsistent hitting with runners in scoring position.

What kills me is taking 3 balls and then letting 2 perfect strikes go by with bat on shoulder… then going for the dirt ball to strikeout.
We need a better hitting coach at minimum

Not always but I think Pearson should have done it in the 7th. Would have brought up Doughty as the tying run and he may be the hottest hitter on the team right now.

Pearson wiffed on his 1 bunt attempt.

Outside of Stevenson you don't want to take the bat out of their hands with the power they bring. Unless its a leadoff situation.

We have one of the best offenses in the country and are facing the #2 pitching staff in America. Quit complaining about the offense. Over the course of the season, that has been the least of our worries

Bunting is like shooting a free throw. Everyone should be able to but a lot of players don’t care about learning how to.

Well sorry boomer. This isn’t the 1920s

It was a ball at his ankle off the plate, but since he had showed he tried to execute with a crap pitch because that was the one chance to surprise them. The only other time I remember him bunting he did it perfectly for a hit without a shift.

I agree but the only person I would bunt is Stevenson. What I don't like is we play station to station and don't steal when there are balls in the dirt except for Bianco the other night. We rely on base hits, walks, and homers. Last night since we were not hitting we should have played a little more small ball and tried to manufacture runs for momentum purposes.

Bunting in college baseball is a thing of the past so teams may have a machine set up to work on bunting but with very little if any instruction. Unless their offensive philosophy is "small ball", the feeling is the 27 outs in a game are precious so why give any of them up with a bunt.

when you're down 4 in the 9th inning, you need baserunners, and if they want to give you a free base runner, you take it.
the whole swing for the fence or stikeout MLB philosophy is fine to have over a 162 game season, or even a 60 game season, but when the playoffs come you have to start playing situational baseball.

we actually attempted to bunt in the 9th he just didn't make contact. Again the point stands you're not taking the bat out of their hands unless its a leadoff situation or a situation like last night down a few runs and need baserunners. The point was when the shift is on during the course of the game you're not having your LH bats just square up to bunt

Nobody really teaches bunting anymore, it stopped awhile back.
Which is so stupid as the art of bunting is simple geometry.
first create an angle with the bat that ensures downward trajectory of the ball.
second, create an angle with either the: (1) head of the bat towards 1st to bunt down third base line or (2) knob of the bat toward third to bunt down first base line.
(opposite for lefties)
After that, just keep the angles and allow the ball to hit the bat (i.e. don't attack the ball with the bat and don't pull back after contact).
It requires some discipline, but it's not the most difficult thing in the world.
