i just need people to understand that before cell phones we had to call landlines and your friend's parents would answer and YOU HAD TO TALK TO THEIR PARENTS until your friend came to the phone

quote:

I would set a prearranged time for my boyfriend to call (after midnight) and I would call time and temperature one minute before said time so his call would come thru on call waiting and not wake my parents. It worked flawlessly!

Those were the days. Anybody have any funny stories from the pre-cellphone era?

You shouldn't be talking to boys on the phone after midnight, young lady.

And you are CALLING boys? That's not Lady-like.

I never minded talking to the parents, it was the siblings I hated to hear answer the phone.

All the rich kids had a separate ‘children’s line.’

When cordless phones became common my little sister and her friends would listen to me talk to my girlfriend on my dad's police scanner

I like this one:
quote:

Our family trick: when finished with activities, I’d call home “collect” (free for me) from a payphone; my parents would *not* accept the charges (free for them) and hang up. It served as my signal for them to come pick me up.

My first girlfriend lived in a different county. It was considered long distance back in the 90s. We would talk all night, every day, until my parents got the phone bill and wanted to kill me

Had one of those clear Zack Morris lookin landlines in my room. Those were they days. Between that and giving my Gateway computer aids with Napster life was good.

Had this one prank where we would call someone and said hold on as soon as they answered. Flipped over and called someone else, then when they answered flipped back over so it seemed they called each other. All the while I was muted lol, best one was a stuck-up girl and a drug dealer.

You remember when you would call a bunch of people with three way calling? It was what I imagine an orgy is like. It was too much and you could never understand who was fricking talking.

This was back in the time I was going to SLU. If you lived in one of the complexes where students lived you would pick up some pretty crazy stuff.

One of my worst frick ups involving a girlfriend happened when I called her house and her mom answered. I asked for another girl. That relationship didn't last long after that.

Yeah we got some pretty nice neighbor phone conversations too. It just wasn't as funny when I was the target.

What is “time and temperature?” Is it just what it sounds like? A number you call and they tell you the time and temp?

What about party lines? Somebody would call and if it wasn't for your home, somebody else picked up. Good fricking goodness.

During the Monday Night Wars, about 10 of us would do this during Nitro/Raw. Good times.
