Bullet velocity, bullet mass, and the resulting impact is a pretty good place to start.
For instance, a .223 used in an AR will land with 335 foot-pounds of force at a distance of 500 yards! A 22, roughly the same sized bullet, will only hit with 70 foot-pounds at the same distance.

Exactly. Plus, many people are poorly educated on even basic gun knowledge. Your can see it in the language they use. Elon appears no different in this case.
Much like Rogan, Elon seems to be an old school democrat who until recently still bought the idea that Republicans were mean, racist, bigoted, etc and Democrats were nice, freedom loving, all about love, etc. With those people you get statements like this one...best hope is for them to lean a few things about the issue and maybe they'll come around.

The only thing “assault” about assault rifles is their appearance.

Assault rifles do require a tax stamp, background check, etc. If you want a full automatic assault rifle you have to jump through hoops.
AR-15 is not an assualt rifle.
These journalist have to run around to every business, every executive to get a statement on every little issue so they can foment anger if they don't agree with the mob or foment praise from the woke mob. How about execs just shutup.

People forget Elon did not grow up in the United States. Foreign countries have a completely different culture and philosophy on guns. Also, he likely hasn't been around guns and isn't knowledgeable about them.
He likely has not spent much time studying the issue.
His comments are wrong and misinformed. I won't hold that against him, as I can disagree with people and still value their opinions.

You can't just make up or change definitions of an asssult rifle. An assault rifle is a select fire rifle that is capable of firing full auto with 1 pull of the trigger and in the case M-4 or M-16 a 3 round burst with 1 pull of the trigger.
An AR-15 is just a semi auto rifle that has a high capacity mag. Liberal gun grabbers have tried to change the definition of an assault rifle.
I guess by mmmmmmmmbeeer's logic a 30-06, 7.62mm, 300 winchester rounds should all be illegal since they carry far more take down force than the little 5.56mm round of an AR-15.
So stop trying to redifine an assault rifle.
Besides the Vtech shooter killed 20-30 with a 9mm handgun.
