Oil for Chainsaw question

Can I use old motor oil from when I change my oil in the truck for the lubricant for the bar?
I know they make a chainsaw “blend”. Wondering if this is a waste of money or not

No, bar and chain oil is really heavy oil

Assuming you collect and store it in some kind of decent way, yes. Dont just drain it from some old dirty arse bucket into a dirty arse jar and start pouring it in stuff. You need to keep it clean. You should be doing this with your old motor oil anyway, it has lots of uses.
Bar oil isn't a waste of money. Its much thicker and tackier than motor oil, and its biodegradable. It works better for the bar and chain but unless you're running a saw hard and often you'll probably never notice. Used motor oil is messy. You may have to adjust your oiler since motor oil flows much easier.

Bar & chain oil is not expensive. Why not just use what you’re supposed to use??

This is one of the Ford vs Chevy questions that comes up on The Foresty Forum routinely. You will get a lot of professionals that use it regularly and some that wouldn't think of putting it in their saws except in an "emergency".
Just be aware the oil from the pan is on the unfiltered side of the system so it is by definition more contaminated than on the pressure side of the system in an engine. At the very least I would filter it before use.

Bar and chain oil is designed to stick, motor oil just slings off and makes a mess especially as the bar and chain heat up. I bought a jug of Stihl oil and it's lasted years. Chainsaw oil pumps are prone to leaks anyway, don't see how running used motor oil will help that just to save a few dollars.
