KSL.com news

ALBANY, N.Y. — She has four limbs, expressive eyes and likes to stroll through greenery in New York City. Happy, by species, is an Asian elephant. But is she also a person?
That's the question before New York's highest court Wednesday in a closely watched case over whether a basic human right can be extended to an animal.
Her advocates at the Nonhuman Rights Project say yes: Happy is an autonomous, cognitively complex elephant worthy of the right reserved in law for "a person." The Bronx Zoo, where Happy resides, says no: Through an attorney, the zoo argues Happy is neither imprisoned nor a person, but a well-cared-for elephant "respected as the magnificent creature she is."

An Asian Elephant? Forget about being human or animal, that is freaking racist!

How fricking dare they assume the elephant identifies as Asian

Thanks for Salt Lake City’s take on a New York State issue.

All people are animals, but not all animals are people.

I know clown world gets thrown around a lot, but the fact that this story is happening now, while we are seeing absolute meltdowns over the Row v Wade rumor, is just wonderful.

this is nothing new. animal rights activists having been trying to pull this type of shite in court for decades. their hope is to finally win one which slides the foot into the door to add this right to all animals and to put a stop to animal ownership, use, farming, and research.

I mean.. it is ridiculous to equate it to a person... but perhaps it is time to acknowledge that some animals are more sentient and intelligent than others: Apes, dolphins/whales, elephants, and others. Not sure what criteria would be.
Maybe a slippery slope cuz I don't want to give up bacon or steak anytime soon, but clearly some animals fall into a higher status territory when it comes to conscious behavior.

I was wondering just this very thing yesterday....
If someone come and tried to kill your cat and you shoot them in the cat's self defense... Are you clear because the Cat was part of the family, and you were defending family?
lawyers????
