I’m much more of a football and basketball guy but obviously want my Tigers to do well in ALL sports. The season started with a lot of hype but seems to have been very up and down. I.e taking/sweeping a series one week only to be swept the next. WHy is this happening? Will the more enlightened of you please educate us. Thx.

No starting pitching.

Every game forces Johnson and Kelly to make almost perfect moves the entire weekend to win a series.

Injuries

Errors & passed balls - it’s mental & after 1 it seemed to throw whole team off balance

I think it’s odd we have not tried to be aggressive on base paths

We got an OM team that was just getting hot

You can’t expect someone that hasn’t batted in 6 weeks to PH & expect them to do great

I don’t understand hitting approach, swinging at 1st pitch from a new reliever or swinging when a guy has been throwing balls

Just my random thoughts

a bad combo of terrible defense and weak pitching staff.

The season started with a lot of hype but seems to have been very up and down.

Yep...on paper before the season started this team looked dangerous.

No starting pitching and terrible fielding

We really on too many guys and any 1 of them having an off day can be disaster

Even good teams will have bad games series but we just don’t have a chance in these low run games.

We have a few really good players (ie Trey Morgan), but overall as a team, we just not good. Defensively, we might be the worst I can ever remember.

This team is exactly what everyone thought they would be coming into the season. Good hitting team with no starting pitchers and a deep bullpen. The defense being this bad is the only thing no one saw coming but it wasn’t expected to be an elite defensive team either.

Good hitting has a tendency to not always be something you can rely on as it will disappear for a few games at times. When you don’t have starting pitching your bullpen, as talented as it is, won’t be able to always bail you out. This team with just one guy like Marceaux or Lange or Nola that you trusted to get you at least 7/8 innings every Friday would look totally different.

Starting pitching. Specifically no dominant starting pitching that can be relied on to get you at least 1-2 wins every weekend.

Obviously defense is atrociously bad, but our #1 issue right now IMO is lack of SP talent.

If you had one ace dominant starter, most of the time it can guarantee you at least 1 win on the weekend and then it would be okay to play .500 ball in the other 2 games. We have no shut-down aces, so we basically play .500 ball all the time, which is not good enough to be elite.

To be fair, IMO it’s kind of surprising to me our record isn’t a lot worse with our lack of SP and atrocious defense. Our offense and bullpen (and a little luck) has made this team’s record probably better than it should be. That’s the silver-lining I guess, overall this team is winning more games than it probably should, which is a good sign in the long run IMO.

Remember if SP was better less balls would be put in play overall, which would somewhat mitigate the defense…If we had better SP.

What he said

Hitting is what we expected

Starting pitching is about what we figured. Probably worse in all reality.

Defense has been the wildcard that we didn't see coming. At the beginning of the year we figured it might just be the yips and would get figured out. Instead, it has turned into our identity in the field.

Starting pitching going for a COMBINED 6-7 innings a weekend isn't going to cut it no matter how good the bull pen is. Couple that with the atrocious defense and you have the recipe for wildly inconsistent baseball.

Errors, passed balls, and a weak mindset.

We've seen enough times when an crucial error or passed ball leads to a loss.

Then we've seen vs Arkansas and Ole Miss where one costly error or passed ball demoralizes the team in Game 1 and they can't recover.

As has been stated, we rely on the bullpen way too much. Last weekend we won an SEC series with only 1 of our starters getting out of the first inning. This weekend was essentially the same from our starters, except the bullpen didn’t pitch as well and the bats went cold.

It doesn’t mean we are all of a sudden a bad baseball team. We are still the same team we were last week. A team that will rely heavily on bullpen arms and big offensive performances.

I know the taste is sour coming off a sweep against a team we should have beaten, but the fact of the matter is a couple months ago many posters thought this team was bottom 2 in the SEC, now they’re all mad that we may have blown our chances to host a regional. Just take a step back and look at the whole rather than just one weekend.

Inconsistent defense and pitching. There are some good bats in that lineup. It looks like CJJ has chosen to try to win with offense.

putting the players in that are supposedly better at defense hasn't improved the defense but has made the offense worse.

He's not trying to "win with offense", he's trying to win period.

Pitching dominates baseball. That’s the most important facet of the game. We do not have good starting pitching. We have no ace. We really do not have a pitcher that can go around the opponents batting order more than two times. And we only have one if them (Hilliard) who is hitable.

Why did you believe we would be dangerous? Hitting alone can’t win championships.

No it didn’t at all. There were major question marks all over the place and the narrative was if they answer them they will be really good.

Who’s going to play third? Who’s going to play right? Who will be the three starters? Will the newcomers in the bullpen be any good? Where does Berry play in the field and has he improved defensively? Those are just some of the question marks this team had.
