He has succeeded well so far. He is pretty much getting all of his oil and gas exports paid in his own curreny now. Thats gonna prove very smart when the us dollar crashes.
Also the ruble is the top performing currency in the world vs the dollar in 2022

It is also often said that at a very minimum the perception of {measurable}victory to his peoples is a mandatory end result for Putin, or all bets are off. Presidency probably even on the line over that.

There is zero win for putin here. He led his nation in to the most vulnerable state since pre WW2.
He has nukes but is extremely vulnerable with the losses he has taken.
Militarily it’s a catastrophe

That’s one way to look at it. Another way is that who really actually knows exactly what’s up. We know what various news/info sources tell us is up. And it’s not exactly uncalled for to be highly skeptical of everything you hear on the subject. Then again a third way is the sonofabitch may be rope-a-doping our arse.

With Finland and other countries joining NATO potentially, I think this about drawing the US in and forcing it to overextend itself, the way the Soviet Union had to do before it finally collapsed. I think he is betting that the US will try to take on too much protection for Europe, while continuing to explode its debt.
This is moronic.

You mean to tell me the Biden administration, of all administrations in history, successfully bluffed and fooled one of the most baneful leaders in Russian history? Joseph Biden??
And no, I don’t “identify” with either side, not a Putin guy, not a Zalensky guy. But to suggest this administration, any damn part of it, and throw this Congress in as well, but you’d be talking about only one of the maybe just a couple of “achievements” of this administration. I just don’t think this is the one.
IMO there was a single factor above all others that made Putin take it from “theoretical future plan” to “can’t pass it up, it’s a once on a lifetime opportunity,” and that was basically that Biden alone almost takes the U.S. out of the fight, a non-factor as American CIC.
And sure enough, Biden was a possum in headlights for about the entire first half of the thing. I guess maybe he’s graduated up to deer in headlights now though.

The Russians have been playing nice nice, but that won't last forever. Their style is blitzkrieg, and nobody knows why they are deviating yet.
The Russian military is not in the position to blitzkrieg anyone. You over estimate the military of Russia. They sealed their fate to being cornered and going nuke decades ago. That's why Russian Generals are being killed on the front lines. Their officer corps is ineffective and their senior NCO's non existent.

But aren’t they likely gaining crucial experience as the thing moves along in time?? I just don’t think Putin’s fresh out of ideas because if the thing ends without some scenario where he can claim victory of some sort, “objectives achieved,” because should it be obvious that Russia was the clear “loser” then that’s the end of him. And I’m guessing he has no intentions of being expelled in such shameful fashion.

quote:Russian military battleground strategy is the opposite of blitzkrieg, and has been since about 1920. Look up Deep Battle Strategy. Not understanding this one element of the Russian military is why many halfwit morons here buy the lie that Russia was going to topple Kiev in 5 days, and that Russia is losing. They aren’t and Russia is methodically doing exactly what they set out to do, as per their Deep Battle military strategy.
Their style is blitzkrieg, and nobody knows why they are deviating yet.

Putin gambled and is at least getting by temporarily in beating the economic sanctions. The world needs food and energy. Russia has that. Europe seems comfortable committing economic suicide over this conflict. Adults need to take over at some point. Apparently, some bigwigs in German industry have tried to speak out for relief.

quote:Putin and many Austrian-aligned economists believe that the GDP calculus to measure the size and health of a country's economy is flawed and incomplete. This contra-theory to GDP measures has been around since the early 80's when the US began "financializing" our economy and outsourcing manufacturing in earnest. It originated at the University of Pittsburg by two professors there. Putin wrote a dissertation about it. So if Putin gambled, he did it with a great deal of certainty from his perspective. They have energy, food and manufacturing to support themselves, and Russia's export revenues are up almost twofold since the sanctions began. Now, Russia has the breadbasket of Ukraine and their ports and waterways. This is the comeuppance for the US's empire-like foreign policies, and trying to NATO Russia off the planet. The US has been poking the Russian bear since 1991.

No, I’m pretty sure he, like everyone in the west, thought he could take Kyiv in a week, topple the government, and force an early surrender.
Putin thought he could take 500k Ukrainian soldiers and reserves with a force of 200k while not destroying vital infrastructure all within a week? I'm not buying it.

Obama and Senator Lugar from 2005 and their involvement in the "Defense Threat Reduction Agency", (DTRA) can help in understanding Putin's rational for such drastic measures. He thought the western governments were there to help, only to realize later, they were there to help themselves, at Russia's peril.

Might be that their equipment is really shitty. People may be underestimating Putins plans. But maybe his plans would be more effective if their stuff didn’t quit breaking down.
A more effective Russian military would be more apt to force the US to spend more….
