The wife(no pics) needs a new car and she really wants to get a VW Taos. I'm not really familiar with VW's other than they're German and I've always heard their expensive to maintain and not all that reliable.

Is this still the case? Anyone familiar with the Taos? Also not thrilled it's the first model year. Trying to talk her into something else, but you know women

I came so close to buying a Passat about 15 years ago. I wonder how that would have worked out. Instead, I bought a Chrysler Sebring. Stupid stupid stupid.

I drive a Jetta.

It's not particularly expensive to maintain, HOWEVER, I do have to take it to a specific garage even for something as simple as an oil change, because anyone not familiar with/certified in working with foreign vehicles won't touch it.

Luckily, there's a place one town over, so it's less than 10 minutes away if I need any work done.

That being said, I love my VW. It's cute, it's safe, and I get good gas mileage.

The reason you hear this:
quote:

they're German and I've always heard they're (FIFY) expensive to maintain
is because it's true.

If you want higher reliability and lower cost to maintain go Japanese (Honda or Toyota specifically)

My family has owned many VWs through the years. We have found them to be very reliable. Fun to drive too, for the price.

I also drive a VW and have had 3 Volvos before as well. They are comparable. Expensive to maintain but very reliable.

Neighbor has a 2017 Jetta. Hasn't had any issues and seems quite happy with it.

Are they reliable? I have heard mixed reviews.

I bought a used Hyundai that was a rental car five and a half years ago and haven’t had a single mechanical issue. It’s been a great buy.

And fudge their emission numbers, resulting in massive lawsuits and decrease in value.

WE had a 2011 Sonata 2.0 Turbo. ALot of car for the money but it was the first year for that model so had a number of issues arise. Hyundai was very good about contacting and addressing them though.

If I was in the market, I would include Hyundai in my search....

It seems each generation of VW gets better, but that is with most brands.

I don't know about the Taos but I have had GTI's in the past and they were a blast to drive. Even the TDI golfs were fun
