Is there any hope of getting a residential contractor anytime soon?

I have put a remodel off for 2 years, and now it looks like I'm screwed. I have made inquiries of several contractors, and most say they can't get to me for a year.
I know labor and materials are through the roof. So next year is fine, but I am amazed that so many guys are simply turning down work, sight unseen.

What's your remodel entail? It may be too small and not worth their time to tie up resources to do it.

What are you needing remodeled? Im a GC and we are slammed but every person that calls gets their info taken down and at least has a person come out and take a look at it. If not, we'd give you reasons on why we wouldn't be able to help.
Unless whn you talk to one on the phone you say "I want my kitchen and bath remodeled, new flooring in the bedrooms, and the outside of my house painted. But I will say, I only have 8k to spend." If you're doing something like that, then you're the problem

They aren’t turning down work to sit around doing nothing. They’re all booked out that far in advance, probably doing bigger projects than yours. Those guys are loving this. Instead of dicking around with lots of little projects that take a lot of unpaid time to set up, quote, etc, they’ve booked themselves back to back big projects that take a while. Nice way to pay the bills.
They’ll get back to bath remodels when they’re not busy building whole houses.

Definitely the best way to have work done where you can say "damn I did a good job with that" and then a professional looks at it and thinks wtf was this guy doing

Well, I'm not talking about a bath remodel. I'm talking about a new kitchen, plus new flooring and paint throughout the entire downstairs.

Fair enough, but as I said, GC’s have all their guys doing whole house builds as fast as they can go. Your best bet is to get on the list now. If they get a couple week gap they might call you to keep the guys busy.

Sounds like you should quit bitching and get on as many lists as you can.

essentially what I did. Had a back patio that needed to be redone. took about a month for them to find time, but they did.
they are coming back this week after about another month to paint interior.
in the meanwhile I've been doing things I can do. Repaint small areas like closets, laundry room and master bedroom balcony/patio.

Doesn't seem to be a whole lot of that where Slippy lives.

The problem is there are too many people building new construction. Those folks don’t want to live in it while you do the work, nor do you have to work behind someone else’s screw ups and hang your name on it. Re-models are a pain in the arse. BUT there is good money in them and I think they will carry the housing market guys through when the new construction market busts, which has got to be coming soon.
We are booked up until August. We are not telling people no, we’re making sure they understand that we won’t be there until after the summer and, just being honest, we hang a price tag on the job that makes it worth all the extra headaches.
We are doing 2 now that we got simply because no one else would even return a phone call. Both pains in the arse but well worth it in the end and have happy, hopefully loyal customers from them.

Exactly.
I’ve gotten pretty good at painting over the years. Only time I need anyone to come in is for stairwells or 20’ ceilings because 1. I don’t have the equipment and 2. I don’t want to die. Normal rooms I can knock out in a day, especially if their isn’t a massive amount of trim.
In fact, we’re building now and I intend to repaint the entire interior before moving in to cover up the awful builder grade paint. MUCH easier with no furniture to move around.

I used thumbtack and found a guy who can do most of what I need at a pretty reasonable price.

No way. The prices may come down a little or stop increasing as much but the country is about 15 years behind in terms of housing stock.

If interest rates continue to rise and the market cools off you will probably have your pick of the lot by the end of the year. I would put it off till then and you will probably save some money and be able to get good work done.

Why work when you can sit at home and get paid?
