I hate when people use the navigation and have the map turn so the car is always facing up. Leave the navigation with North always facing North people!

I LOVE "Road Maps"! I specify road maps because these days MAP stands for something else...my dad would NOT approve of.
Before GPS...I would bring a road map on my flights to keep track of where we were.
Also...when I drive I always have a road map with me. Waze and Google are good, but if you seek an alternative route...I trust me over Wade 90% of the time.
When an accident occurs Waze is gonna take you...and everyone else on the 1st alternative route...I take the 2nd alternative route.
Gonna go look at my Road Atlas now

TLDR; people are too damn reliant on phones and need to read a map
All GPS is a map with geolocation. People need to learn to navigate without relying so heavily on real-time technology - that's what you're saying.
I mean, 60 years ago, a cranky old bastard like yourself would have likely said, "These kids in their fancy new cars with the tail fins are driving around with these huge book of maps that block their vision. They need to learn how to navigate without relying on a map so much."

I love maps. I usually get topo maps and road maps of anywhere I travel. Geography is fascinating.

Kid, you can say that again.

Its really not hard, and the chances of you actually needing to know how to read a map over a lifetime is pretty damn high.
Technology is awesome, but if you're counting on it 100% of the time, you'll be let down.

Land navigation should be a requirement for high school graduation. And by that I mean they should be able to take this…
And one of these…
And be able to move from any point to another and also call down accurate artillery fire as well.
But that’s just this old tanker’s opinion.

Hey, reading a map is more correct than any Garmin, goggle or any other electronic device. Map reading has become a lost art.

I agree. I traveled extensively in NC pre smart phones and lived and died by one of those detailed map books.
If something ever happened to gps and map apps a lot of people wouldn’t be able to get out of their own neighborhood.

Only thing this woman needed is a phone charger. Why bother aquireing and reading maps when you don't have to??

You get a map for every place you travel these days?
Last summer on vacation I printed out directions from Gmaps to bring with us on the road trip.
Never knew if we wouldn't have a signal in Zion, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon.
But I don't do this for trips to Houston or the Beach or anything.

Yeah, but I assume you aren’t a woman under 40.
It’s scientifically proven men are better at directions and maps than women. Probably why most of the greatest navigators were men.

Mine has a stroke when first opened. Force close and reopen; works fine then.
It has annoying carpool prompts that come up.

Because you are smart.
Whoever said take alternate route 2 needs to shut it. Quit telling everyone.
GPS needs a stay on the paved road option.
Atlas and maps in the car have saved us many times when GPS failed. But we travel.

I have to admit one thing they do better in France (maybe all of Europe), is that at darn near every intersection on big or small roads there is a sign that points to the next town, maybe the next major town past that, and also the city center and major attractions. If you generally know what towns you need to pass through to get somewhere, you never need to look at a map for turn-by-turn directions - just follow the signs.

Is it really that hard for some people to read a map? I haven’t looked at one in years but I’m pretty sure I could pick one up and find a destination.
