RIP, and wear the kill tether!

/that’s a terrible thing. I rarely wear the kill cord. Gotta keep this in mind.

I hardly ever wore mine until recent years.

Last weeks episode of Louisiana Law they were writing tickets for not wearing the kill switch lanyard. I googled what the law was while watching and learned it became a Federal law in 2021.
Seven states already have similar laws, including Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Louisiana, Nevada, New Jersey and Texas. Forty-four states have the same kinds of regulations for personal watercraft.

It’s so easy to do. Clip it to your life jacket and put your life jacket on every time you’re moving with the big motor.

That's what I do. Keep it clipped to the life jacket all day. Throw the life jacket on when driving, throw it on top the console while fishing.
It was a really difficult habit to form after a lifetime of never using neither one but now I'm glad I got into it.

Some of yall may have seen this before but I'll post again...
Pulled a guy out of big lake who was hit by his boat after being tossed out.
Almost had his hand completely taken off. It was hanging by a thread This was a big guy with a red shirt.
He was hard to see in the water. We followed the blood trail.
No life jacket and nothing to grab onto to get him in the boat.
Red shirt was invisible below the water line.
If that boat had hydraulic steering it may have just headed straight until it hit someone or something. You are a danger to others out there.
He was in a center console boat and was still thrown out.
Wear your kill switch.

Kill switch law became effective April 1, 2021
The law requires that operators wear their kill switch when at planing speed while operating boats less than 26 feet in length. This is a federal law that was passed by the U.S. Congress as part of Section 8316 of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2021.

I've had friends pick at me about it from time to time. "Look at you being all Mr. Safety Guy". It's all in good fun but I have to set the example I expect my son to follow so I do it. I've also never drank a beer when I operate my boat. And I love the hell out of cold beer .

I try to wear mine every time my motor is cranked, and I also try to make it a habit to tell anyone in the boat with me to tell me to put it on if they notice I'm not wearing it. Its very rare I catch myself not wearing it; its becoming a good habit finally after owning a boat for 5 years.

I am 66 and fish by myself quite often. I always make it a point to wear a life belt while the boat is in motion and the kill switch. Given my age , I should really wear the life belt at all times.

I ended up buying a bright orange and reflective life jacket called a near shore vest. It's very light and hardly notice its on. After it was so hard to see a guy in bright red shirt in the water I gave up on my olive green one...

That's not a bad idea. Two of my three life jackets are camo. Now that I think about it, that's a terrible pattern for a life jacket. Might be time to invest on three bright new ones.

Been thrown out a flat with a 60 tiller. It definitely happens before you know it.
Reminded me of faceplanting on a knee board as a kid. If you know how fast that happens, you know what I mean. Especially if it peeled your eyelids back, lol.

I have these too. Self-inflating, so when you're wearing them they're so light and thin.
They also perform a dual role for me because it holds my trolling motor remote close to my body and stops it from swinging around when I'm moving around the boat.
Highly highly recommend these. They're so comfortable you'll actually see me walking around the marina with it on because I don't even realize I still have it on.

West cove can get shallow. What do we think he hit that caused him to fall out?
